PROPRIOCEPTORS

meaning: awareness of ones own self important in : balance & coordination)

CAN BE FOUND IN
MUSCLES, TENDONS & LIGAMENTS
Muscle fibers

Muscle spindle

Golgi tendon organ Tendon

HOW DO PROPRIOCEPTORS WORK?

muscles, tendons, ligaments stretched proprioceptors get stimulated send impulses to the brain

brain interprets impulses

send impulses to muscles coordinate movement & maintain balance

e.g walking, cycling, typing

HUMAN BRAIN

3 PARTS OF THE BRAIN

(that you have to know)

FUNCTIONS OF PARTS OF THE BRAIN

Cerebrum:

Centre of intellect (e.g. reasoning, learning, memory, intelligence, speech) Controls voluntary action (conscious control)

Cerebellum:

Coordinates body movement, balance & posture

Medula oblongata:

Controls all involuntary actions

EFFECTS OF INJURIES ON THE BRAIN

Brain injury (a hard blow on the skull) Stroke (blood vessel blocked/ bursts) Infection e.g JE virus (encephalitis) Injuries to CEREBRUM: memory loss, loss of senses, paralysis Injuries to CEREBELLUM: lose coordination; unable to maintain balance; abnormal gait Injuries to MEDULLA OBLONGATA: unable to control all involuntary actions FATAL!!!!!
