. a unit 47 or number 47 always represent number 47. It never represents another value. In algebra, we often use letters to represent numbers. A letter that stands for a number is called a variable or unknown. A variable can be used to represent numbers in addition, subtraction, multiplication or division problems. An Equation is made up of terms. Each terms is a number standing alone or an unknown multiplied by a coefficient (ex. 7a, 5x, 3y) For example: 3y + 5y = 32 would be considered a three term equation. An algebraic expression consist of two or more numbers or variables combined by one or more of he operations. Ex.

Many algebraic expressions contains more than one of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Placing a number or variable outside of an expression in parentheses (brackets) means that the whole expression is to be multiplied by the term on the outside.
