Wildlife Displaced by Flooding

The Canadian Wildlife Federation advises people in flood areas to be aware of wildlife that may be displaced as a result of the rising water. Flooded habitats could force wildlife to seek temporary refuge in areas where they might not normally be found such as residential communities. People are encouraged to minimize their contact with the animals as they may be under duress and in survival mode. Residents are reminded to: Stay away from areas where wildlife have taken refuge. Not interact with or feed wild animals. Avoid roads in flooded areas to reduce the interference with wildlife and possible wildlife collisions. We recognize that people want to try to help wildlife, but in these circumstances, often the best thing you can do is allow them to find their own refuge and food, says Wade Luzny, CWF CEO and Executive Vice-President. Feeding wildlife will encourage them to stay in the area as they will see it as a new food source. Wildlife posing a threat to humans should be reported to local wildlife authorities. Kraus said Tall Tale Ale would be served at the Elephant Mountain Literary Festivals opening gala on July 11, as well as at evening readings by featured festival authors on July 12 and July 13. Theme of the this years second annual literary festival is Paths to the Page. The opening gala will feature local poets, musicians, and BC wines as well as Nelson Brewing Company products. The event will be held at the Shanti Centre, the former Christian Science Church at 237 Baker Street. Reading on the evening of Friday, July 12 at the Hume Room of the Hume Hotel, 422 Vernon Street, will be Giller Prize winner MG Vassanji; 2011 CBC Canada Reads winner novelist Terry Fallis, and Order of Canada and Order of BC winner Howard White, publisher, nonfiction author, and poet. The following evenings reading at the Hume Room features Trillium Award winner novelist Camilla Gibb, along with popular BC poet, fiction author and musician John Lent, and Quebec graphic novelist Pascal Girard. The Elephant Mountain Literary Festival also includes credit courses in writing by BCs Interior mountain colleges, plus publishers Kirstin Cochrane of McClelland & Stewart Doubleday Canada and Tracy Hurren, managing editor of Montreals Drawn & Quarterly. Story is the beginning of literature, said festival director Lynn Krauss. And here in Western Canada, tall tales were the first stories people loved to pass along. Glacier Creek Park Regional Park on Duncan Lake is closed until further notice. The park cannot be accessed because of the effects that recent flooding have had on the road and Hamill Creek Bridge, said Cary Gaynor, Parks Operations Supervisor for the Regional District of Central Kootenay. The park could be closed for at least several weeks, or longer, said Gaynor. Once staff have determined that the park can be safely accessed, the public will be notified. Electric Assist Bikes At Slocan Valley Rec

Thinking about getting an electric assist bike, but not sure if you want to make the financial leap to get there? Want to find out if this form of travel is as much fun as it looks? Slocan Valley Recreation currently has two adult electric-assist bikes available for the public to try out on a day-use basis. The bikes belong to the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society who are partnering with Slocan Valley Recreation. There is a male and female model to help maximize ease of use. The bikes can get up to 50 km on a charge and make the riding experience much more enjoyable, especially for those with some degree of mobility challenges. For a small donation you can take the bike out for a ride (the Rail Trail is an excellent location) and see how it feels. Several who have used the bikes in the past have gone on to purchase their own electric-assist bikes and credit getting a chance to try one out a big help in the decision making process. So why not give Judy or Denise a call at Slocan Valley Recreation 250-226-0008 and try out a bike this summer? Go with a friend. Ride up or down the Rail Trail and see how beautiful it looks.
