Early Reading Checklist

Young children who are read to on a regular basis have been found to exhibit a similar progression of reading behaviors. Use this developmental progression to identify a childs current level of reading performance. Object-focused preverbal child mouths, bangs, chews, drops book needs book brought close to touch or to look at pictures reaches out to book ips pages randomly looks at pictures momentarily begins to imitate adult (vroom, meow) Picture-focused beginning talker listens as adult reads pats and points to pictures makes noises in response to pictures (motor/animal noises) names some pictures demonstrates book orientation performs some actions seen in pictures names familiar people or objects turns pages back and forth at random asks simple questions talks about actions participates in reciting repetitive story lines or rhymes tells portions of stories Picture-focused conversationalist talks to characters reacts to characters actions and emotions begins to pretend read orally anticipates parts of a story 0-18 MONTHS 3-5 YEARS 12-36 MONTHS
