Introduction
Artic Calendar Capers in English and Spanish for S, R, L, and /S/ R / L / Blends is designed for use
by speech-language pathologists working with students who exhibit an articulation or phonological
disorder or delay involving /s /, / r /, or / l / phonemes. These eleven English and eleven Spanish
articulation units and sixteen pages of words and picture lists facilitate learning of the /s /, / r /, and / l /
phonemes as singletons and consonant clusters in English and Spanish words.
This book provides enjoyable and interesting materials for practicing articulation skills in school,
clinic, hospital, and private practice settings. It also provides a way for students to practice target
sounds at home with family members. A reproducible letter to parents explaining the use of ACC is in
both English and Spanish. A recording form for monitoring progress is also included.

There are a total of eleven English and eleven Spanish articulation units, one for each month from
September to June and a combined set for July/August. Each unit includes two holiday “Speech Pal”
figures, a Dot-to-Dot Fun Page, and a game board. Articulation words and picture lists are provided in
strips for the phonemes /s /, / r /, or / l /, and for consonant clusters in both English and Spanish. A blank
“bingo” game card is also included.

Instructions for Use

Each unit focuses on a holiday or special event for each calendar month. Two articulation figures
(“Speech Pals”) are provided for each month. Word and picture lists are provided in strips for the
following phonemes:

English Spanish
/s/ /s/
/ s / clusters / s / consonant sequences
/r / / r / trilled
/ r / clusters / r / tap
/l/ / r / clusters
/ l / clusters /l/
/ l / clusters

Lists of mulitsyllabic Spanish words are also included because the Spanish language consists
primarily of bisyllabic or multisyllabic words. Students frequently reduce the complexity of multisyllabic
words by omitting one or more of the syllables. For example, mariposa becomes “posa”. Lists of
common two, three, four, and five-syllable Spanish words are therefore provided for use with students
who have syllable reduction problems.

The first two pages of each unit consist of the articulation figures for that month. For example,
September’s theme is “Back to School.” The practice figures or “Speech-Pals” are a school bus and a
school house. These figures may be photocopied or reproduced on construction paper or tagboard for
©2004 Super Duper® Publication

each student. Clinicians may laminate “Speech Pals” to increase the durability and extend the life of
the figures.

First, select the target words for each student and cut out the word strips containing these words.
Next, cut out the dotted portion of each articulation figure (i.e., the door on the school bus). The word
and picture strip may then be attached to the figure. The student may practice the target words in the
treatment session and/or at home while coloring or pointing to the corresponding picture.

Words and picture strips can be left as long strips or folded and paper-clipped to each figure.
Students sometimes enjoy unfolding each strip as they practice saying target words one at a time.
Blank word and picture lists are also included if the therapist wishes to add additional target words.

4
Articulation figures can be sent home for practice as a whole page with directions written at the top of
each page, or the entire figure may be photocopied onto construction paper and cut out.
The third page in each unit is a “Dot-to-Dot” Fun Page, provided for additional practice. Selected target
words may be written on the line next to each number. Each target word must be said correctly before the
student may draw a line from one number to the next. This may also be used for home practice. In this
case, the target words may be written on each line before the student takes the page home. Instructions
for the parents and student are written at the top of each page.
The fourth page is a game board featuring the theme for each month. The activities on each board
encourage students to practice speech sounds in words and also to learn basic concepts, such as: behind,
beside, next to, and in front of; rhyming word pairs; and opposites.

Directions for Game Board

Each student takes a turn rolling the dice, then selects a speech card from the / s /, / r /, or / l / pile,
depending on speech needs. After the target word is produced correctly, the student advances the number
of spaces on the game board, as shown on the dice. If students land on a space that requests a certain
action, they must comply with the request before continuing with the game. Play continues until the player
reaches the end. Game boards and game cards may also be reproduced and sent home with the student
for family practice. They may be glued to tagboard and laminated for added durability.

Additional Uses for Words and Picture Lists

The articulation words and picture lists found in this book may be used for a variety of activities. Game
options include:

1. Bingo
A blank “bingo” card is provided to make a Speech Bingo Game. Reproduce the page and glue
selected pictures from the words and picture lists to each square in order to create individual game
cards. To play, the clinician or parent selects target words, one at a time, from a small box or bag.
If the student’s bingo card has the picture, the student must say the word correctly before covering
the space with a bingo marker. The first player with five markers in a row, column, or diagonal wins
the game.

2. Matching
A matching or memory game can be made by cutting and pasting two sets of pictures to small
cards. To play, all cards are placed face-down on a table. Each student takes a turn selecting two
cards and saying each word. The object of the game is to make matches. The player with the most
matches wins. To expand this activity, students may say phrases or sentences for each card.

3. Art Projects
Pictures may be cut out and placed face-down on a table. Students select a picture, say the target
word, and glue the picture to a previously cut shape. For example, on a Christmas tree, the
pictures serve as ornaments, and for the flower, the words may serve as petals.

4. Film Strips
©2004 Super Duper® Publication

A small cereal or tissue box can be covered with paper and decorated. Cut two
slits in the front. Target strips may be run through the box slits so that the
student may practice saying each word. To expand this activity, students may
create a language story using the strips of target pictures.

PARENT LETTER

Dear Parent:
Your child is working on the ______________________
sounds in words. You can help your child learn this sound by
providing time for daily practice. Ask your child to name each
picture on the “Speech Pal” list. As your child names each
picture for you, listen carefully to make sure the sound is
pronounced correctly. If pronounced incorrectly, have your
child say it again using the correct sound.

Thank you for your help. Practicing at home will help

your child learn new sounds more quickly. Please return your
child’s “Speech Pal” and word list on _______________.

Sincerely,

Speech-Language Pathologist

estos nuevos sonidos por medio de prácticas diarias. Por favor
de ayude a su hijo/hija a practicar los sonidos/las palabras
preguntándole el nombre de cada una en la lista de articulación.
Mientras su hijo/hija les nombra cada palabra en el dibujo,
escuchen cuidadosamente para asegurarse que él/ella pronuncia
el sonido correctamente. Si escuchan un error, haga que su
hijo/hija repita el sonido/la palabra otra vez, usando el sonido
correcto.

Muchas gracias por su ayuda. La práctica en casa ayudará a su

hijo/hija a aprender nuevos sonidos más rápidamente. Favor de
regresar el muñequito o dibujo que ayuda a su hijo/hija a
