Are you interested in acquiring skills to think, become aware of differing perspectives, and create reliable arguments? Studying works of Western thinkers from Antiquity to the Renaissance will provide a thorough foundation for a comprehensive understanding of Western civilization. Between the sixth and fourth century BCE, thinkers in ancient Greece began to challenge traditional beliefs, wisdom, and stories. They were seeking answers for questions about gods, the world, human nature, society, rejecting popular common sense notions in favor of critical investigations about what might be considered true reality versus mere appearance. The thinkers became known as philosophers, lovers of wisdom. Discover these interesting thinkers trough their writings and learn about Western philosophy from its beginnings in ancient Greece until the Renaissance. PHILOSOPHY 2010 Western Philosophy: Greek Philosophy - Renaissance (IAI H4 901) Human Relations 3 credit hours Fall Surveys philosophy as it developed from the classical period in Greece to the early advocates of scientific method, examining major philosophical figures in their historical contexts with an attention to how philosophy developed in response to historical, social and political events. Course requires Reading Placement Test Score-Category One (3 lecture hours) Recommended for students who are interested in the study and critical analysis of philosophical discourse and gain an understanding of the development of ideas in the context of Western civilization. The course provides an excellent introduction to the study of philosophy for all interested students, a thorough foundation for Western thinking.
