In our fast paced and highly mobile society, successful organizations increasingly depend upon people with effective communication skills to help them manage change and maintain viability. In social settings, professional settings, and overall career development, group and team communication skills are consistently ranked among the top key competencies sought for in college graduates. This course explores a wide variety of important communication concepts in a group context ranging from developing trusting relationships to building ones self-confidence in a public setting. Topics discussed include interpersonal and listening skills, decision making and problem solving strategies, conflict resolution, cultural awareness, and leadership theory. The overall objective is to provide an awareness and understanding of essential communication concepts to help one develop a sense of professionalism and confidence in a group environment. Spring/Fall/Summer

Study various principles, techniques, and theories of communication as they apply in group and team settings. Topics of discussion draw from a wide variety of concepts in communication theory including interpersonal relations, trust building and influence, conflict management, listening skills, problem solving and decision making strategies, and leadership development. Prerequisite: Course requires Reading Placement Test Score-Category One. (3 lecture hours) Recommended for students who are interested in the study of communication skills and theories and the development of professionalism and confidence in a group or team setting. Speech 1120 is also an alternate option to Speech 1100 to meet the A.G.S. and A.A.S. General Education requirement. It also meets the Human Relations and Contemporary Like Skills requirements.
