In the Western philosophical tradition, the Renaissance is considered a time of transformation in which modern science is born, a dramatic change in thinking from a predominantly theological orientation during the Medieval Age. Discover what has been called the Copernican Revolution in Philosophy and investigate its significance for an understanding of the world today. Get to know thinkers like Ren Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Martin Heidegger, Jean Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida and others who have considerably shaped those theories and ideas that influence modern and post-modern life. This course will sharpen the ability to critically assess problems and thoughts that give contours to a modern and postmodern understanding of humanity and the world at large. PHILOSOPHY 2011 Western Philosophy: Enlightenment - Present (IAI H4 902) Human Relations 3 credit hours Spring Surveys philosophy as it developed from the modern period to the current era, examining major philosophical figures in their historical contexts with attention to how philosophy developed in response to historical, social, and political events. Prerequisite: Course requires Reading Placement Test Score-Category One (3 lecture hours) Recommended for students who are interested in the study and critical analysis of philosophical discourse and in gaining an understanding of the development of ideas in the context of Western civilization. The course provides an excellent introduction to the study of philosophy for all interested students, a thorough foundation for Western thinking.
