Proverbs 9 Wisdom and Folly contrasted / The Seven Pillars of Wisdom

The Book of Proverbs Chapter 09

Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
Wisdom hath builded her house: For we are labourers together with God:

I Corinthians For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are
3:9 God’s building.
I Corinthians According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
3:10 masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.
But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
I Corinthians For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus
3:11 Christ.

She hath hewn out her seven pillars:

The number seven in the bible denotes completeness. Proverbs 9:1 shows that
wisdom is prepared and planned ahead. Hear is one of many sevens in the bible
that we can memorize in order to be prepared and plan ahead:

The seven tactical tools that God gives us in order to fight against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places in Ephesians 6:10-20

1. Having your loins girt about with TRUTH

2. The Breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS
3. Feet shod with preparation of the Gospel of PEACE
4. The Shield of FAITH
5. The Helmet of SALVATION
6. The sword of the Spirit, which is THE WORD OF GOD
7. Praying always with all PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints

Proverbs 9:2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also
furnished her table.

Proverbs 9:3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the
city,

Proverbs 9:4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth
understanding, she saith to him,

Proverbs 9:5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

Proverbs 9:4 is the last call to the simple. At this point in Proverbs, there is no
longer a cry out to the scorner or the fool. Wisdom also calls out to him that wants
understanding so that he can attain unto wise counsels as mentioned in Proverbs
1:5. In the parable Of The wedding banquet, unbelief in the Lord lay behind the
refusal to listen to the Lord’s call.
Matthew And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
22:1
Matthew The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for
22:2 his son,
Matthew And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and
22:3 they would not come.
Matthew Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold,
22:4 I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things
are ready: come unto the marriage.
Matthew But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his
22:5 merchandise:
Matthew And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew
22:6 them.
Matthew But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies,
22:7 and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
Matthew Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were
22:8 bidden were not worthy.
Matthew Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the
22:9 marriage.
Matthew So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many
22:10 as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Matthew And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not
22:11 on a wedding garment:
Matthew And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding
22:12 garment? And he was speechless.
Matthew Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away,
22:13 and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew For many are called, but few are chosen.
22:14
Matthew Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his
22:15 talk.

The banquet is the celebration of those who enter the kingdom, and the exclusion is
the judgment of God for those who reject the invitation of grace. We should listen to
Wisdom’s cry.

Proverbs 9:6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

In this parable, Jesus explains how the five wise virgins were just in forsaking the
five foolish virgins:

Matthew Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took
25:1 their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
Matthew And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
25:2
Matthew They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
25:3
Matthew But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
25:4
Matthew While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
25:5
Matthew And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go
25:6 ye out to meet him.
Matthew Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
25:7
Matthew And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are
25:8 gone out.
Matthew But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and
25:9 you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
Matthew And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready
25:10 went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
Matthew Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
25:11
Matthew But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
25:12
Matthew Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son
25:13 of man cometh.

Proverbs 9:7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh
a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

Proverbs 9:8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will
love thee.

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee:

Matthew Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before
7:6 swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee:

Proverbs Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s
27:9 friend by hearty counsel.

Proverbs 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man,
and he will increase in learning.

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser:

Proverbs A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding
1:5 shall attain unto wise counsels:
Proverbs To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and
1:6 their dark sayings.

Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Proverbs Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of
the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 9:11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be
increased.

The beginning of knowledge:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise
1:7 wisdom and instruction.

Hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way,
8:13 and the froward mouth, do I hate.

The beginning of wisdom:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of
9:10 the holy is understanding.

Prolongs days:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be
10:27 shortened.

Fountain of life:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of
14:27 death.

The instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is
15:33 humility.

Tends to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with
evil:

Proverbs The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide
19:23 satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

There are seven verses in the book of proverbs that start with, “The fear of the
LORD”. The Holy spirit has put it in my heart to write a prayer using elements of all
seven verses when I pray for wisdom:

Dear LORD, we come to You with honor and reverence for your Holy name. We ask that
you drive evil, pride, arrogance, deceit and hostility far from us and give us the
knowledge of the holy. Thank you LORD Jesus for shedding your blood and dieing on
the cross so that we may have life more abundantly. Please LORD; pour out Your
wisdom on us so that we have a fountain of life. We pray that you send us Your Holy
Spirit to teach us and instruct us on what to say and how to do your will as we tend to our
everyday life. We humble ourselves as we pray these things, in Jesus name. Amen.

Psalm The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have
111:10 all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 9:12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou
alone shalt bear it.

Proverbs 9:13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

In Joshua chapter 2, the scarlet thread represents the blood of Jesus. Joshua 2:19 is
a type of promise of salvation. Just like the promise in Matthew 1:21 (And she shall
bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people
from their sins.) Being inside Rahab’s house, with the scarlet thread hanging from
the window, was the orders given by Joshua’s men in order to save Rahab’s family,
but each one had a choice. Joshua 2:19 (And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out
of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we
will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be
on our head, if any hand be upon him.)

Joshua Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have showed
2:12 you kindness, that ye will also show kindness unto my father’s house, and give
me a true token:
Joshua And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my
2:13 sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
Joshua And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business.
2:14 And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly
and truly with thee.
Joshua Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon
2:15 the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
Joshua And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you;
2:16 and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and
afterward may ye go your way.
Joshua And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou
2:17 hast made us swear.
Joshua Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread
2:18 in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father,
and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto
thee.
Joshua And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the
2:19 street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever
shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be
upon him.
Joshua And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which
2:20 thou hast made us to swear.

When the watchman blows the trumpet, he that takes warning shall deliver his soul.
That choice is up to the individual:

Ezekiel Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
33:1
Ezekiel Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I
33:2 bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their
coasts, and set him for their watchman:
Ezekiel If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn
33:3 the people;
Ezekiel Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if
33:4 the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Ezekiel He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be
33:5 upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.

In 70 AD, those people who believed the words of the Lord were wise for
themselves: but those that scorned the word of God bore the punishment.

Luke Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are
21:21 in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter
thereinto.

We can choose to open the door to Jesus or not open the door to Jesus. In Jesus’
letter to the Laodiceans, Jesus makes it clear that it is our choice. Jesus does not
use flattering words, deceptive practices, or force:
Revelation Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open
3:20 the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Proverbs 9:14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the
city,

Clamorous means that she is offensively loud and demanding. Why would anyone
take orders from anyone who is offensively loud and demanding that knows
nothing? The same are many apostate church systems that impose grievous
ordinances and then shun those that follow the word of God. Those apostate
churches are like Mystery Babylon, which sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat
in the high places of the city and demands to have the preeminence over the
congregation to do her own will and NOT the will of God:

Revelation And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and
17:1 talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the
judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Revelation With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the
17:2 inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her
fornication.
Revelation So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman
17:3 sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven
heads and ten horns.
Revelation And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with
17:4 gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of
abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
Revelation And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE
17:5 GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF
THE EARTH.

Diotrephes is a perfect example of clamorous leader who known nothing, but sits on
a seat in the high places of the city:

III John 1:9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence
among them, receiveth us not.
III John Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating
1:10 against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he
himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth
them out of the church.

In the letter to the church of Ephesus, they were commended for hating the deeds
of the Nicolaitanes.

Revelation But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I
2:6 also hate.
Revelation He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To
2:7 him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the
midst of the paradise of God.

The call of the foolish woman:

Proverbs 9:15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:

Proverbs 9:16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth
understanding, she saith to him,

Proverbs 9:17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness:

Ephesians And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather
5:11 reprove them.
Ephesians For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in
5:12 secret.
Ephesians But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for
5:13 whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Ephesians Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and
5:14 Christ shall give thee light.
Ephesians See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
5:15
Ephesians Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
5:16

The scorner hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD met his
destruction in Proverbs chapter 1:

Proverbs But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
1:25
Proverbs I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
1:26
Proverbs When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a
1:27 whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
Proverbs Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early,
1:28 but they shall not find me:
Proverbs For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
1:29

The fool sinned against the Lord and met death in Proverbs chapter 8:

Proverbs But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me
8:36 love death.

The simple chose ignorance instead of knowledge and went to hell in Proverbs 9:18

Proverbs 9:18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the
depths of hell.

Suffering the vengeance of eternal fire:

Jude Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving
1:7 themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an
example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
