Hammerhead Shark
Quick facts Diet: Carnivore Life span in the wild: 20 - 30 years Size: 4 - 6 m Weight: 230 450 kg Group name: School or shoal

The hammerhead shark (Sphyrna) can be found in warm waters all over the world. It has a very good sense of smell which helps it find its prey. Hammerheads feed mainly on stingrays because they are unharmed by the poison in their spines. They use their large head to pin the stingray down to the ocean floor. Hammerheads also eat crabs, squid, octopus, and lobsters. The hammerheads eyes are on the side of its head, giving it better vision than most other sharks. They have triangular shape teeth with sharp serrated edges. There are nine species of hammerhead shark. The great hammerhead is the largest and can grow up to 6 m in length. Hammerheads are very social creatures and swim in groups of 10 to 20. Larger groups of about 200 have been spotted in Australia. Female hammerheads give birth to live young. A litter can have 6 40 pups. These pups swim away from their mother immediately and stay with each other until they are big enough to look after themselves.
