Frilled Lizard
Quick facts Diet: Carnivore Life span in captivity: 20 years Size: 0.9 m Weight: 0.5 kg

The frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingie) is a strange looking reptile that lives in North Australia and New Guinea. It is found in tropical rainforests and woodlands and spends most of its time in the trees. The frill around its neck folds flat against its body. When the lizard is scared, it opens its mouth and raises the frill to make itself look larger in order to frighten a predator. It also hisses and flicks its long tail from side to side. If this impressive display does not work, the lizard will turn quickly and run away to the nearest tree. It is a speedy runner and runs on its two back legs.

Frilled lizards are usually brown or green in colour which provides excellent camouflage in its habitat and makes it hard to spot. They have sharp eyesight that can spot a beetle from metres away. They feed on cicadas, beetles, spiders, butterflies and termites.

Female lizards lay a clutch of 10 23 eggs in a nest below ground. The young hatch between 8 and 12 weeks and must look after themselves.
