Box Jellyfish
Quick facts Diet: Carnivore Life span in the wild: Less than 1 year Size: 3 m long Weight: 2 kg Group name: Fluther or smack

The box jellyfish (Cubozoa) or sea wasp uses its tentacles to stun or kill prey. The tentacles contain venom which is extremely painful to humans and is one of the most deadly in the world.

Box jellies are found in tropical Australian waters and the Indo-Pacific. They have 15 tentacles trailing from each corner of their bell and each tentacle has thousands of stinging cells running through it. They propel through the water and can move quicker than most jellyfish.

Box jellies have no brain, heart or skeleton. They have clusters of eyes, similar to our own on each side of their bell. Each eye has a retina, iris, cornea and lens. Box jellyfish are pale blue in colour and almost transparent which makes them difficult to see. They hunt during the day and rest on the ocean floor at night. They feed on small fish and crustaceans.
