Pink Lake

Pink Lake is a salt water lake in Goldfields-Esperance, Western Australia. Its real name is Lake Hiller, its 4km in length and 2km in width. It is named Pink Lake because of the colour in summer and the salt thats in it. The Pink Lake was discovered by Matthew Flinders who was a British navigator in 1802. Two possible reasons why the lake is pink is because of the high concentration of salt crusts that are in it and because of a chemical called Dunaliella Salina which is a specie of alga that inhabits salty waters. The colour of the lake changes throughout the year from a hot, bubble gum pink to a glistening white. The lake is not always pink, because of the green alga that grows in it. It is home to the rarest birds, one which is the Black-Eared Miner. It is also home to the largest Australian flower, the Murray Lily. The lake is best viewed at dawn, late in the afternoon, when the sky is cloudy. The pink lake is on Middle Island, the largest of the islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago.
