Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Reflections Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able

to reflect an object on a Cartesian grid using a vertical or horizontal linear function as the mirror line. Most students should be able to reflect an object on a Cartesian grid using a mirror line in the form y=mx+c. Some students should be able to perform and describe a reflection on a Cartesian grid. Keywords: Reflection, Function, Object, Image, Equation, Cartesian grid Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap reflecting objects using the axes of a Cartesian grid as vertical and horizontal mirror lines. Emphasise the need for the image to be an equal distance from the mirror line as the object. To move into the development phase discuss that the x axis can be called y=0 and the y axis could be x=0. Use the hand-out provided in additional resources to increase the pace of the lesson. Development To reflect object A in the line demonstrate that the mirror line has a constant value of one whereas the value is variable. Therefore the mirror line is vertical at and parallel to the axis. A common misconception is for students to consider to run adjacent and parallel to the axis at . Once the mirror line is drawn the objects vertices can be reflected so the corresponding vertices are equal distances away. Model the remaining reflections on the second slide using a similar approach. Use the interactive Autograph V3.3 or Geogebra files to provide instant feedback. To reflect objects in the line and students need to consider the change of orientation for the mirror line. The line of reflection from the object is then perpendicular to the mirror line. If needed, students could use a reflective strip to see the position of the reflected image. Again, use the interactive Autograph V3.3 or Geogebra files to provide instant feedback. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate and extend the learning of the lesson by having students describe the position of the mirror line as a linear function. Have the class present their solutions on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could reflect objects using functions such as Less Able Students may need to focus on using functions such as functions in the next. +1 or or . in one lesson and move on to Resources: Mini-Whiteboards Worksheet Interactive Geogebra Files Interactive Autograph V3.3 files.
