Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Describing Enlargements Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

be able to fully describe a single transformation using a rotation or translation. Most students should be able to fully describe a single transformation as a reflection, rotation or translation. Some students should be able to fully describe a single transformation as an enlargement, reflection, rotation or translation. Keywords: Transformation, Rotation, Centre, Translation, Vector, Reflection, Symmetry, Enlargement, Scale Factor, Image, Object Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students review reflective and rotational symmetry by identifying missing squares within a shape that has a given symmetry. A worksheet for this problem is provided within the additional resources section in order to quicken the pace of the lesson. Development The second slide is intended to review the basic properties of a rotation, translation and reflection by matching the transformation with the information which fully describes it. Alternatively, the description cards could be removed from the slide in order to increase the level of challenge. It is important for the students to understand the properties associated with each transformation: Translation o Vector Rotation o Centre o Direction of turn o Amount of turn Reflection o Line of symmetry Enlargement o Scale Factor o Centre The class could work through the problems on the third slide independently using a method of trial and error. Again, this is provided as an additional worksheet to save the students from copying the diagrams. Solutions could be provided through the use of the Autograph V3.3 file in additional resources. Plenary The plenary is intended to challenge the students since they must first identify the type of transformation and then complete the image. Discuss with the class why it must be an enlargement pointing out that it is only an enlargement which results in a non-congruent image. Differentiation More able: Students could consider describing the transformation of graphs. Less Able Students may benefit from not using negative scale factors this lesson.
