What is a GDV and how can ca I tell if my dog is bloated?
Gastric Dilatation ion and Volvulus, also k known as Bloat, occurs when a dogs stomach becomes distended with gas and/or food and then twists on its axis. It is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate surgery to correct. We typically see GDVs in large, deep chested dogs such as Great Danes, Standard Poodles and German Shepherds, but it may occur in any breed. The rst signs you may notice in your dog are restlessness and unproductive retching, where a dog makes several attempts to vomit but nothing comes out. Later, your dogs abdomen may have a bloated appearance. The exact cause and prevention of GDV is not known, but it may be associated with letting your dog exercise directly before or after eating and drinking. If you think your dog may be bloated, contact your family veterinarian or the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of York Region for advice.
