Jai Jai Ganga Jai Hara Ganga
One of the incomparable names of Ma Parasakthi in
Lalitasahasra Nama is Mahapralayasakshini. She alone will
remain as the one and only witness during the maha
pralaya which would mark the total annihilation of this
Universe. As one watched the flooding torrents of Ganga
and her tributaries, Mandakini, Bhagirathi and others,
during the Uttarkhand tsunami it looked as though Mother
is providing us an ants eye view of the mahapralaya, may
be as a warning.
Mans greed, total absence of satya and dharma from
individual and collective lives which are totally ego centered,
start over flowing from human minds into the nature outside,
the result is, nature starts claiming her share of the spoils.
Beware! dams have to be constructed across the river of
evils in the human mind before we start building them on the
rivers which inundate our land.
The unforgettable beauty and grandeur of the
Himalayas have to be seen to be believed. The gurgling
frothing waters of Alakananda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi,
the thick forests of Devataru and pine trees that border
them, the glistening white snow covered peaks of the mighty
Himalayan ranges and the simple highly hospitable village
folks who add to their wholesomeness, are to be seen it
took just a few seconds for this beauty and grandeur to

change and put on a most horrifying face. It
was as though the all merciful Mother Lalita
Parameswari suddenly was caught up by the
anger towards Mahishasura and transformed
Herself into the fearful Durga. This scenic
change was so very frightening! One could
close the eyes and imagine how it would look
if a man - made dam was broken. God forbid!

That scene took my mind to a soul fill-
ing story from the treasure chest of my child-
hood memories the thrilling story of how
Ganga, the beloved daughter of Himalaya, got
transformed into the river Ganges, thereby
paving the way for the growth of the never
ending flow of Indian spiritual heritage.
Ganga, as the young daughter of Hima-
laya used to descend into the plains of Bharat
with her playmates everyday. One day, when
she returned after her days play, Himavan
found her very sad and moody. On enquiry,
she produced from the folds of her apparel a
tiny bundle which was that of a new born child.
She said with tears flowing down from her
eyes, Father, today as we were playing about
in the plains we saw a very sad sight. The
people there were suffering from severe
drought. There was no water to quench their
thirst. Dead bodies lay scattered here and
there and on one such body of a woman I
found this little one about to die. I picked it up
and have brought it here. Father, is there
something we can do about it?
Looking deep into the sorrow filled eyes
of his daughter, tenderly lifting her chin Hima-
van uttered, My dear, certainly you can do
something about it. From now onwards you
descend into the plains of Bharat, not to play,
but with a divine purpose, assuming the form
of a mighty river. Let your friends also accom-
pany you as your tributaries. Together you can
inundate the plains of Bharat varsha. The pure
waters of Ganga gurgling out of the Himalayan
peaks would bring fresh life to the plains. A
new civilization will crop up there with univer-
sal love, peace and tolerance as its founda-
tions. The civilization of Bharat will become an
ideal for the rest of the world to emulate and
would bring everlasting glory to the country.
Your waters would be the purest in the world,
capable of removing all sins of human beings.
You would be renowned in all the three worlds
as an immaculate purifier, holiest among all
rivers. Hurry up, get ready to go immediate-

Godspeed.
The great rishis of our country did intense tapas on the banks of Ganga and realized that
the foundation of life is Truth Eternal. Their discoveries on the nature of man, God and the Uni-
verse have not been surpassed by anyone anywhere in the world. Ganga has thus become
symbolic of this great spiritual knowledge which raised India to the pinnacle of human civiliza-
tion. Thus has she become renowned as the destroyer of all sins. It is this Ganga and her tribu-
taries, who suddenly transformed themselves into an unprecedented gigantic water force anni-
hilating everything on their way, who, circumambulating Lord Kedarnath flowed into the plains
creating untold havoc as though to teach a lesson to those who irreverently crowd in these holy
places. When greedy men abetted by the authorities start exploiting the holy places by building
money minting luxury resorts destroying environment displaying the wildest and ugliest animal-
istic human characters, nature has to burst out in anger and unhappiness. This catastrophe is
just the beginning, a warning to man to modulate his behaviour. Our great spiritual centers are
not to be tampered with for cheap pleasure, but to be reverentially preserved for the sake of the
whole of humanity.
Would those who matter in our country learn a lesson? Future of India, as the light of the
world, depends on that.

The very form of Guru is the root of Meditation,
Gurus feet, the root of worship. Gurus words
forms the root of Mantras and Grace of Guru the
root of Liberation, says Sage Vyasa. The Sanskrit
root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru"
denotes the remover of that darkness. There-
fore one who removes darkness of our
ignorance is a Guru. Hindus celebrate it in
honour of the great sage Vyasa, who is one of
the greatest gurus in ancient Hindu traditions
and a symbol of time tested Guru-shishya
tradition. This was the day, when Krishna-
Dwai payana Vyas a aut hor of
the Mahabharata was born to
sage Parashara and to Satyavati, later to be-
come the queen of Hastinapur. Thus this day is
celebrated as Vyasa Poornima also. This festi-
val has great importance for traditional Indian
academics and scholars, who celebrate this
day by saluting their teachers as well as re-
membering past teachers and scholars who
have left such a great heritage for us .
Gurupoornima was celebrated in Anan-
dadham on 20th July. Dr Karumatra Vijayan,
well-known Sri Vidya Upasaka and having a
number of students studying Tantra Shastra
under him, was invited as the Guest speaker.
He elaborated the qualities of a guru Sisya

A turtle family went on a picnic. The turtles,
being naturally slow about things, took seven
years to prepare for their outings. Finally the
turtle family left home looking for a suitable
place. During the second year of their jour-
ney they found it. For about six months, they
cleaned up the area, unpacked the picnic
basket and completed the arrangements.
Then they discovered they had forgotten the
salt. A picnic without salt would be a disaster,
they all agreed. After a lengthy discussion,
the youngest turtle was chosen to retrieve
the salt from home. Although he was the
fastest of the slow moving turtles, the little
turtle whined, cried, and wobbled in his shell.
He agreed to go on one condition: that no
one would eat until he returned.
The family consented and the little
turtle left. Three years passed and the little
turtle had not returned. Five years...six
years...then in the seventh year of his ab-
sence, the oldest turtle could no longer con-
tain his hunger. He announced that he was
going to eat and began to unwrap a sand-
wich. At that point the little turtle suddenly
popped out from behind a tree shouting, SEE
I knew you wouldn't wait. Now I am not
going to go to get the salt.
About the story : Some of us waste our
time waiting for people to live up to our
expectations. We are so concerned about
what others are doing that we don't do
anything ourselves.
story to Ponder

Rishis and sadhus perform tapas for the benefit of
mankind and all creation. They tolerate hardships and
insults without any thought of personal gain. One such
rishi was Dadhichi. He willingly offered his body to save
the devas. Once a Brahmin named Vrutra became the
head of the demons. He gave up his dharma duty of
doing good to others. Instead he turned to violence and
began to battle with the devas. Hence, he became known
as Vrutrasur. Asur means demon. He began to win. The
devas became frightened against his evil might. Along
with Indra, they approached Shri Vishnu for help. He told
them that he could not be destroyed with ordinary
weapons. Only a weapon made from the bones of a
saintly rishi will kill Vrutrasur, revealed Vishnu.
But nobody will give up his beloved body. Who would die
to provide a weapon? inquired the devas. O devas! Go
to Dadhichi rishi. Make a weapon with his bones. A saintly
sage will not worry about giving up his life for the good of
others. Ask Dadhichi for his bones as bhikhsha alms.
The devas went off in search of Dadhichi rishi. When they
reached his ashram, they felt anxious. Would the rishi
help? What can I do for you? asked Dadhichi rishi.
Vrutrasur, the leader of the demons, is destroying us. We
are losing against his evil might. So we asked Shri Vishnu
for help. He advised us to make a weapon from your
bones. O great rishi, please help us and deliver us from
this evil, pleaded the devas humbly.
The supreme donor is one who gives happily what is
asked. O devas! said Dadhichi. It is better that my
bones help you attain victory, rather than rot in the
ground. The message of Sanatan Dharma is to remain
happy in the happiness of others. Here, I give you my
body. So saying, he sat in meditation and meditated upon
Paramatma. With his yogic power he then left his human
body. The devas collected the bones. Indra made the
vajra weapon from them. With this the devas battled with
Vrutrasur. It is said that the battle lasted for 360 days. In
the end the devas won. In the beginning, the devas fought
with their own might and lost. Now with the help, guidance
and blessings of God, they won. In life we should always
first seek guidance from God and the God-realised Sadhu
for success and happiness.
