Drought
Assistance was provided to drought-stricken Papua New Guinea through support to the Governments National Water Sub-Committee and the DPLGA. The work included planning and implementing emergency action to provide water and sanitation, rehabilitating water supply systems and developing emergency response procedures for future droughts.

Tidal wave
When a tidal wave struck Aitape, GHD assisted by purchasing and procuring relief supplies, chartering planes and helicopters, arranging transport for medical supplies and coordinating domestic and international donations. At the disaster site, GHD provided specialist advice on providing water supplies in the care centres housing displaced survivors of the tsunami. Following the emergency phase, GHD assisted in coordination of the rehabilitation phase. Over the next few months, 35 kilometres of road, numerous bridges, school infrastructure, aid posts and health centres were constructed.

Water supply
GHD developed a strategy for improving water supplies and sanitation in twelve provincial towns, and administration in the water supply sector. We further assisted the PNG Water Board and Office of National Planning to develop an institutional framework and policies for long-term solutions.

Management information systems

GHD, in association with a team of specialists from the aviation and information technology sectors, implemented a management information system for the OCA.

Balus program
GHD assisted with the administrative development of the PNG Civil Aviation Authority. Services included the development of a 10-year financial plan, administrative design and appropriate institutional framework, comment on human resources and technical issues, and identification of risks and weaknesses.

St Ignatius High School, Aitape

The project involved upgrade of accommodation for an increasing intake of year 11 and 12 students; renovation and minor works to existing school buildings; and an upgrade of basic infrastructure. GHD, in association with architects Irwin Alsop, provided design, documentation, tender and contract administration, construction supervision and project management services.

Meni-Kisenopoi Road, stage 1

GHD provided full design services for roadworks: pavement design, an environmental impact study, drainage structure design, preliminary estimates, design report and preparation of specifications and design drawings for construction.
