Date: 08-2-13 H.E. Hassan Rouhani President of the Republic Islamic of Iran Your Excellency, We are writing to convey our deep concern about the government of the Islamic Republic of Irans decision to welcome Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to Tehran to participate in events marking your swearing in ceremony. As you know President Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Although Iran has not yet ratified the Rome Statute, we urge you not to allow Bashir to defy justice by stepping onto Iranian soil. As a country of strategic importance and influence in the Middle East region and globally, we believe it is imperative that the Iranian government support justice for the victims of atrocities in Sudan. Further, by providing Omar al-Bashir with an opportunity defy the will of the international community to attain justice at a time when hundreds of thousands of peoples are at risk of starvation in South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions resulting from al-Bashirs atrocities, it will only serve to embolden a regime that continues to bomb civilian areas and cut off humanitarian aid to those in dire need. Welcoming Bashir sends the wrong message to the Sudanese people and the wider international community. In order to achieve lasting peace for the region, justice and accountability remain a critical component. We hope that you will take this opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to these values by standing up for the people of Sudan by rescinding the invitation for President Bashir to travel to Iran or requesting for a representative of his government to attend. Sincerely, Niemat Ahmadi Director of Global Partnership United to End Genocide
