DEFINITION: Drugs that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS).

Also known as cholingeric agonists or parasympathomimetics NSG RESPONSIBILITES M-onitor VS. HR and BP decrease when large doses of cholinergics are taken. A-scultate breath sounds for rales or ronchi. Cholinergeic drugs can increase bronchial secretions. G-ive cholinergics 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. If client complains of gastric pain, the drug may be taken with meals. N-ote for excessive sweating TYPES: Direct Acting Indirect Acting

INDICATIONS (Direct Acting) - Reducce intraocular pressure -Increases tone and motility of bladder and GI tract -Relaxes sphincters -Helpful for P/S atony of bladder (Indirect Acting) -For diagnosis and treatment of myasthenia gravis -Used to reverse neuromuscluar blocking drugs -Used to reverse anticholingeric posioning -Used to trat xerostomia

O-verdose is a No No. So observe for muscular weakness and increased salivation.
