Ms. Dicks Class

*The spelling test will consist of these ten words and ten transfer words. We will study the er ending, -ible ending, and im- prefix next week. Well also look at words with ui in them. Its important students LEARN how to spell not memorize a list of words for a test. I gave a pretest of 90 words your child should already be able to spell. Ill send home the information next week after I have a chance to photocopy their work for my files.

Multiplication: The expectation is for your child to complete 100 problems in five minutes. Generally, 4th graders begin the year finishing less than 50 on the first test. This is not for a grade, and I realize timed tests can be a stressor for some students. In the past, students LOVED this after the 4th or 5th test once they realize theyre only competing against THEIR time. The goal is improvement. Knowing their facts quickly will help them for years to come in math when they simplify fractions, do division, find the area of polygons, etc. Multiplication doesnt go away. It just gets incorporated into other types of math problems. I hope youve heard that your child has had an absolutely wonderful first week of school because I have. Your children are the BEST, and I cant wait to watch their learning unfold as the year progresses. Thank you for sharing them with me.
