Lesson Title: Taxi, Taxi: A Sol-La-Mi Melody and Steady Beat Work

Objective(s)

Students will sing the song Taxi, Taxi with solfege and lyrics using Curwen hand signs. Students will accompany the song with a steady chord bordun.

Materials and Resources

We will use our classroom set of Orff instruments, a hand drum, and the projector.

Anticipatory Set

After our listening activity, hello song, and attendance, I will display a solfege ladder on the board. As I sing for the students, I will ask them to count the number of sol, la, and mi notes they hear. Next, we will transfer the solfege into lyrics, allowing time for students to share what they know about taxi cabs.

Input
What do students already know?

Students have been practicing keeping a steady beat with their bodies and instruments all year. We have also sung a handful of sol-la-mi songs. Every student is familiar with instrument rules and procedures.

Modeling
How will you demonstrate skills?

After modeling a clear singing voice, I will show the students how to march to the beat in their taxis. Once the class has a strong sense of the pulse, I will choose a taxi driver to pick up three passengers. These four students will go to the barred instruments to play the steady beat. I will demonstrate how to play a C-G bordun with my projected xylophone visual.

Check for Understanding

I will check for understanding by visually and aurally assessing the children as they sing and play the barred instruments. If a student is struggling, I will pair him/her with a friend who can model a strong beat.

Guided Practice

After the students understand the flow of the game, I will monitor the class to make sure each student has a turn to play an instrument. Depending on the rate of success, we will add a poem to create a B-section. Students will improvise a melody on the barred instruments to match the rhythm of the poem.

Independent Practice

I allow the students to play freely on their instruments periodically throughout our class period, but most of this lesson focuses on guided practice.

Closure

We will sing our good-bye song and I will hand out the note award to the best-behaved student. To test understanding of our lesson, I will have students sing our song with Curwen hand signs as they line up.
