My 8-point plan for picking "better" stocks

1. What shape are its finances in? I read financial statements, cash-flow statements and notes going back as long as I can to build up a picture of the firm's current financial health 2. What's its net cash position? This tells me A LOT about a stock. It tells me how healthy the company is coming out of the financial crisis. It tells me how much debt the company is carrying. It tells me whether their REAL value matches their "market cap", which can often be misleading 3. How dependent is it on credit? Any companies that are heavily dependent on credit are an immediate turn off. We've all seen how volatile the lending market can be.
