POLITICS JANUARY 23, 2009 First Embryonic Stem-Cell Trial Gests Approval From the FDA
In a watershed moment for one of the most contentious areas of science and American politics, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the way for the first-ever human trial of a medical treatment derived from embryonic stem cells. Geron Corp., a Menlo Park, Calif., biotechnology company, is expected to announce Friday that it received a green light from the agency to mount a study of its stem-cell Treatment for spinal cord injuries in up to 10 patients. The announcement caps more Than a decade of advances in the companys labs and come on the cusp of a widely Expected shift in U.S. policy toward support of embryonic stem-cell research after Years of official opposition. FDA Approves Embryonic Stem-Cell Study 3:17WSJs Ron Winslow and Gerons Dr. Thomas B. Okarma comment on the significance of the first human clinical trial. Using embryonic stem-cells. WSJs Beckey Bright reports. This is the dawn of a new era in medical therapeutics, sais Thomas B. Okarma, Gerons president and chief executive officer. The hope that stem-cells therapy will respair and regenerat diseased organs and tissue goes beyond what pills and scalpells can ever2do.
STASCIS: Early Surgery in Spinal Cord Injury Improves Outcomes, Lowers Complications
by Caroline Cassels
April 29, 2008 (Chicago, Illinois) Early decompressive surgery significantly improves outcomes and reduces complication rates in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), a large multicenter study suggests. Presented here at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) 76th Annual Meeting, preliminary, 1-year results from the Surgical Treatment of Acute Spinal Cord Injury Study (STASCIS) showed 24% of patients who received decompressive surgery within 24 hours of their injury experienced a 2-grade or greater improvement on the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) scale, compared with 4% of those in the delayed-treatment group.
Furthermore, he said, complication rates among individuals who received early intervention were about 20% lower than in those whose treatment was delayed.
IN FACT, HE SAID, BASED ON THE CURRENT LITERATURE AND EMERGING DATA FROM STASCIS, THE SPINE STUDY TRAUMA GROUP, A CONSENSUSBASED GROUP OF THE WORLD'S 40 TOP SPINE SURGEONS, HAS RECOMMENDED THAT PATIENTS WITH AN ACUTE SCI, WITHOUT OTHER LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS, SHOULD HAVE EARLY DECOMPRESSION 3INJURY.
