HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

The Instructors would like to wish you a rather belated Happy New Year!! After a snowy start when we had to cancel some lessons (sorry!), training has started in earnest and classes have been very busy. 2009 was a great year for the club: students performed well in gradings, we had lots of new students, and attended various tournaments and events. 2010 looks to be even better: in this newsletter you will find dates of the dan (black belt) and kup (colour belt) gradings for the year as well as details of some tournaments that are coming up. All members of Powerhouse TKD are welcome to come to any of our classes (subject to age/grade on Wednesday and Thursday in Swanmore!!). So if you find you cannot make your normal lesson one week, why not come along to one of the other sessions and meet some of the other club members? All lessons are usually taught by either Master Pat, Stephen, Darren or Tessa.

The next grading should be on Sunday 21 March.(nb provisional date only). If you would like to take part in that grading please attend as many lessons as possible before it so that you can practice the techniques needed for your grade. DAN GRADING SUCCESS On 5 December, Luke Hennah took part in the TCGB Dan grading and achieved his first dan black belt. Luke has trained with Master Pat for the past few years at Portsmouth University and became a member of Powerhouse TKD when he left University. Well done Luke!!

NOTE TO OUR NEW RED BELTS!! TCGB holds two dan gradings a year, and always arrange a seminar to be held a couple of weeks before the grading which covers everything needed. These seminars are open to everyone who is 2nd kup and above, whether they wish to grade or not. They provide an excellent opportunity to train with the most senior Instructors in the Association and with member of other clubs. Anyone considering taking a dan grading in the next year should be attending these seminars as part of their preparation.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS 20 March 2010: The Taekwondo Chungdokwan National Championships is being held in Bracknell. This is a great event to which all clubs that are members of TCGB are invited. In the morning there is a Poomsae (patterns) tournament and this is followed by a kyorugi (sparring) tournament which lasts the rest of the day. Last year Powerhouse had a small team at the competition who performed really well. If you think you may be interested in taking part, please let one of the Instructors know as soon as possible. We will then be able to explain more about what goes on and will maybe sort out some specific additional training for people who are entering. Even if you dont want to take part, why not put the date in your diary and come along and watch and support your club! 17 April 2010: Master Gerry Reilly is holding one of his novice tournaments in Overton. This will be open to both juniors and adults and there will be patterns and sparring competitions. This is aimed at students who have not taken part in tournaments before. If you are interest in this, please let one of the Instructors know and make a note of the date. There should be other events taking place later in the year.

SUIT AND EQUIPMENT ORDER Do you need a new suit or any other equipment? I am going to be placing an order with Kwon on 13 February 2010. So if you want me to order anything for you at club prices, please email me on tessa@powerhousetkd.com as soon as possible so that I can include it in the order (Theres a pricelist attached to the back of this newsletter)

GREEN BELTS AND ABOVE Stephens lesson in Swanmore on Thursdays (6pm-7.30pm) is open to any one who is a green belt or over. This lesson is going from strength to strength which is an indication of how well our students are progressing (as well as what a great teacher Stephen is!!) At these lessons we cover the grading syllabus for these more senior grades, so anyone who wishes to grade for blue tag or above should ensure that they come to as many of the Thursday sessions as possible. As students progress through the grades, the examiners expect to see techniques improving in all areas of the syllabus, and students are required to show that they remember everything they have been previously tested on. For these reasons, a student would normally expect to grade less frequently. If you come to the lessons regularly and work hard, the Instructors will ensure that you continue to progress and grade when you are ready.

BE ON TIME FOR LESSONS!!!

Please make sure that you arrive in time to start the lesson promptly. Late arrivals disrupt the lesson and also increase the risk of injuries etc because the students are missing the warm up.

SUITS AND STUFF!!

Attached is a price list for new suits and equipment from Kwon. For more information about any of the items, please visit www.Kwon.com The prices we can offer are significantly lower than those you would have to pay to buy directly from Kwon because we get a club discount. The prices are aimed to cover delivery costs, but if any surplus is made on an order it will be put into club funds and used to purchase club equipment. Please let Tessa know if you want anything

DRINKS
Whilst there is water available at Reception in Swanmore, it disrupts the lessons to have students leaving the hall to get a drink, and the Instructors cannot always keep an eye on the children once they have left the hall. You cant always rely on there being any cups available either!! Please ensure that you bring a drink in a bottle that can be used in the hall.

CLUB MERCHANDISE
The club has a few items of club merchandise available for members to order. It is not a requirement for members to buy these, but they are ordered in for those who do want them. Prices are set just to cover our costs, so we think they are very good value. Club T-shirts: Adults 10 each; Children 8 each. We get these printed locally and can obtain them individually whenever required. Order forms are available from Tessa. Club Sweatshirts: Weve just ordered these for those people who wanted them. If you missed this order, please contact Tessa and she will find out a price for a single order. Club Badges (for suits): 2.50 each. Darren and Master Pat have a small number of these with them most weeks.
