Language a person learned from birth


AKA mother tongue, arterial language Learned within the critical period of your life Basis for your sociolinguistic identity Will be successful in both likelihood and quality Acquisition is rapid

Any language other than your first language The stages of learning a language are the same When learning academically, teachers will correct grammar and spelling without differentiation Learners are able to construct correct utterances that have never been seen or heard before. Often called the auxiliary language or lingua francas People tend to never achieve the same level of fluency After the age of 6, if you are not fluent, you cannot be. Will rarely be fully successful Will not achieve native control of the language
