September 2013 Pitch Market Scorecard

With the major Fall lm festivals now behind us and several studios development coffers about to replenish, we decided to take a look at which buyers bought the most pitches in the fourth quarter of each of the past couple of years. As youll see, theres still room to hope that 2013s total pitch sales will end up close to last years total: In 2011, Columbia and Warner Bros. each bought 5 pitches in Q4. Last year, Disney did as well. Fox bought 4 pitches in the last three months of 2011. Universal bought 3 in Q4 2012.

Now take a look at the studios with the biggest year-over-year drops in pitch purchases (2012 compared to year-to-date 2013): Disney and Paramount each bought 9 last year but only 1 each in 2013 so far Warner Bros. bought 11 last year but just 5 so far this year Columbia bought 7 last year but just 2 in 2013 so far

Paramount only bought 1 pitch in the fourth quarter of each of the last two years, so were not holding out hope that theyll change their pattern. But its certainly possible that the other three laggards will step up as in years past, and were hoping they do. Keep your ngers crossed, Hollywood.
