Nixon policies of engagement with foreign policy strategies used during the Cold War.

Nixon was interested in bringing together the nations more than wasting resources on keeping the wounds of war open. Nixon also had no interest in focusing on world dominance around the globe. There was still a great concern about the role of the Soviet Union played in the way they were trying to influence those smaller powers of the world. Nixon and Kissinger were busy trying to find ways to contain Soviet power. They wanted to achieve this by not using the threat of arms but through negotiations to ease tensions. They were attempting to make connections between the U.S. and the Soviet cold war issues. They did this by allowing concessions to the Soviets on nuclear arms. In exchange the Soviets would have to limit their arms buildup. Nixon basically shifted cold war policy. He spent his career fighting communism and now he was focusing on using those Communist powers to the advantage of the American people. Nixon was focused on creating a more stable relationship with Communist countries. This was welcomed by the public. These were tactics were the opposite of what was used by his predecessors. They were more focused on flexing the muscles of the United States super power to make others conform to the American way.
