Why? On 17 Aug 1945, Indonesia declared their Independence from the Netherlands (after Japan's occupations ended up in August 1945 and given up to Netherlands due to their loss in WW II). The main celebrations is the ceremony of hoisting (in the morning/10:00AM) and lowering (in the sunset/6:00PM) of the "hereditary flag" (bendera pusaka) of Indonesia at the National Palace, the Indonesian presidential residence. How? On the day, many games and competitions are held in neighborhood, and many buildings are decorated in red and white (the national flag's colors). Each house, office, gov. buildings and others displays the Indonesian flag. The neighborhood is decorated sometimes the whole month (August) and houses flies the flag for about a week full (though there are residents who fly it almost a month long).
