Class Participation Aids - Guiding Stones

Guiding Stones
by Len

Help preschoolers and young children know where to go with this simple idea.

It can be difficult to get younger children to stand where you want, or to move around the room in a certain pattern. Using guiding stones can be the answer, and the children will have fun at the same time. From different color sheets of poster board or construction paper, cut out irregular shaped stepping stones, about ten inches long and eight inches wide. You can even laminate the stones so they can be used over and over. Before your activity, tape the stones in place on the floor. For example, you can arrange the guiding stones to mark off the boundaries of a game. When you want the children to march in a circle, you can place the guiding stones in a large circle to show the kids where to step. You can also play games with the stones. Place them in random places in the classroom, and have the children see how fast they can step on each one. Play musical stones, where one is taken away when the music stops. The possibilities are endless.
