Grammar: Conditional Sentences

Name: __________________________________ ( ) Date: __________________

Primary 4: _______________________________

Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used
to show that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain
condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.

1. When the condition is very likely to be fulfilled, use:

if + Simple Present, will (Simple Future)

e.g. If Mr Soames catches the boy, he will beat him.

If the boy escapes, he will have a better chance of surviving.

2. When the condition is very unlikely to be fulfilled, use:

if + Simple Past, would / should + Infinitive

e.g. If Mr Soames were a rich man, he would probably be kinder.

If I were the boy, I would/ should try to run away too.
If Beatrice knew the kind of life the apprentices had, she would be more
sympathetic.
