POW Grade 6

Due October 2

Mrs. Bonner is planning a picnic for her class and each student is going to bring a visitor. She started planning the seating. (See below). She thinks that 6 people can sit at one table but that wont be enough for everyone. She pushes two tables together and can now fit 10 people. (Draw table 2) How many tables are needed to seat 52 people? Tell how you know. Can you think of the pattern rule that would describe this pattern? If so, could you then use the rule to determine how many people could sit at 25 tables? (If the tables continue to be positioned in the same way?) How many tables would it take to seat 100 people? How do you know?

Thinking

Level 4 All the parts to the question were answered. Identified the pattern rule and used it as one way to solve the problem.

Level 3 Showed one strategy to solve the problem successfully. All the parts to the question were answered.

Communication Strategy is very clear. Solution is clearly stated. The pattern is clearly stated. All numbers have labels as to what they are.

Strategy is clear; I had to guess once at what you meant. The solution statement is missing. Most numbers have labels.

Level 2 Showed one strategy to solve the problem but not successfully. Problem partially solved. Not all the parts to the question were answered. Strategy has gaps. Few numbers have labels.

Level 1 Did not show one appropriate strategy to solve the problem. Did not solve the problem.

No explanation is given. Strategy does not make sense at all.
