The Doorbell Rang Lesson Plan

Big Idea: Students will have an understanding of how division works and that it can be shown in

a picture and a number sentence.

I can statement or student objective: I can solve division word problems

The student will be able to ….. Solve division word problems in picture and a number sentence

Launch:

Good morning students, Can anyone tell me what we learned about yesterday? (Splitting

numbers into different groups) Right so we talked about how for example, 12 can be separated

into 3 groups of 4. Today we are going to expand on this a little further. We are going to start by

reading the book “The Doorbell Rang” by Pat Hutchins. I want you to pay very close attention to

how many cookies each person is getting at a time. (Read through story. Make a point to stop

every time more people come to the door and ask the students how many cookies they think

everyone can get now, Have them turn to a partner and talk about how many cookies they think

everyone will get, then continue reading).

That’s a lot of people in one house and a whole lot of cookies! We are going to be using this

story on our worksheet today.

Explore: Students work in partners or small groups to solve the problem. There should be

multiple solutions or multiple ways to solve the problem.

The first section of your worksheet I want you to do with a partner. When you and your partner

have completed this part. You will do the rest of the worksheet on your own.

Clarifying: Can someone read the direction for the first part for me? (Call on student) Alright

now for the first part, how many cookies do we have total? (Answer 12) Right and how many

cookies do we have total for the second part? (Answer 18)

Probing: How can we write this as a number sentence? Could we use a different strategy to

solve this? Maybe a picture

Extending: Can you think of a new way to solve this problem?

After you’ve completed the first page go on to the second by yourself. This is a serious of word

problems similar to our story today. Work on these the best you can.

Assessment: Look for a solution with a picture and one with a division number sentence.

Summarize: Teacher guided discussion of the key math concepts from the problem. Students

share what they learned and are actively involved in the summary.

Have 2 students write their answer on the board. (One with a picture, one with a division number

sentence) Alright class, let’s come back together as a group. Raise your hand if you solved the

problems one of these ways. Alright turn to a partner and tell them how they solved this one

(point to picture). Call on a student to explain the picture and how it solved the problem. Alright

can anyone tell me how we read this (points to division number sentence) Call on student-

example of correct response-12 divided by 3. Exactly. Both the picture and the number sentence

are both modeling 12 divided by 3. Now we know that we can show division in a picture but also

through a number sentence.

Evaluation: Students will be able to model division problems on their The Doorbell Rang

worksheets.

Accommodations:

- Enrichment: Have students write out division number sentences for the word problems

they already solved.

- Remediation: Smaller numbers in word problems. Use manipulatives to solve the word

problems. Go over the word problem with them so they understand what the question is

asking them. (relaunch)
