Time Frame: 1 Class Period

Overview:
Students will shift from multiplication problems to division problems. The goal is to help
students see the relationship between multiplication and division strategies. This lesson will
show students how to partition an amount into equal groups.

Materials:

Counters
White Boards/ Dry Erase Marker
Math Journals (Optional)

Key Vocabulary:

Division
Partition
Equal Groups
Sharing

TEACHING PLANS
Introduction
Introduce the word Division and write it on Chart Paper.
Ask students to discuss what other words represent division.
Review the key vocabulary terms.

Essential Question:
How does modeling division problems help in problem solving?

Time Frame: 1 Class Period

Task
1. Give each student a set group of counters. Ask them to pretend that these counters
are candy that they need to share equally with their friends for a birthday party.
(Example: Each student has 18 pieces of candy and there are 9 friends at the party.
How many pieces of candy will each friend get?)
2. Allow them time to see how they distribute the counters. (Teacher should circulate
the room to observe)
3. Continue with more examples allowing students to model the distribution of a set
amount of items.
4. After each problem is complete, ask students to share how to write the division
equation on the smartboard.
5. Discuss each division problem & representation, use the vocabulary.
6. Last, in their math journals have each student try and design their own division
problem.

Wrap Up
SHARE: Have students share their division problems with the class.
