ENGLISH EXAM PREPARATION FORMAL ESSAY STRUCTURE: - Introduction: o Hook (interesting/ relevant idea) o Set context(material, topic, angle)

(understanding of quote) o State thesis clearly o Preview of arguments - Body: o Major supporting arguments. (each major argument is a body paragraph) o Each major argument using A>P>E o Use text and reasoning skills to show why thesis is valid. - Conclusion: o Restate thesis and arguments(in a new way) to remind reader of what you just argued) o Suggest WHY what youve said is important. (What are the implications for your arguments) o What is the greater significance of your essay? Outline is recommended but not required. Synthesis Outline: - Thesis statement. - Arguments and proofs - Three proofs per argument required minimum. Make sure that proofs come from different readings. Remember, this is a SYNTEHSIS essay. Make meaningful connections between the readings to drive a thesis response to one of the quotations. Quotations can be modified without changing the meaning, using square brackets. E.g. In 2009, televises sports viewing was dominated by soccer fans with, 74% of all sports on-the-air-time being designated to soccer. A>P>E Argument>Proof>Exposition. A: Thesis statement (Introduction) P: Arguments (Body) - A: topic sentence for body paragraphs - P: Synthesized textual evidence to prove argument (topic sentence). o A: To set up textual evidence. o P: Integrated textual evidence. o E: Explanation of use of textual evidence. - E: Explanation of evidence and argument.
