WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR:

How does the sequence establish the tone of the film (generate suspense)? How does the film introduce where and when the film is set? How does the sequence introduce characters? How does the film use text titles to tell you about the themes of the film? (how do they move, what colour and font has been chosen?)

HOW DOES THE SEQUENCE ESTABLISH THE TONE OF THE FILM (GENERATE SUSPENSE)?
At the beginning of the scene (around 0:44) the music begins as a quite quiet sharp noise. This then begins to crescendo until it reaches a peak at 1:27 when the camera takes a photo. Since we have been staring at this camera for about 10-20 seconds it creates a sudden release of tension. There is also a lot of tension because we have been staring at this camera for so long and it does not look like an ordinary camera Also, this is a close up of the camera. This could be used so when the camera flashes it surprises the audience due to it being so close.

HOW DOES THE SEQUENCE ESTABLISH THE TONE OF THE FILM (GENERATE SUSPENSE)? (CONT.)
Another moment when suspense is generated is when the man asks the police officer at about 2:16 to see the photos that the man took. (Which were confiscated by the police). This generates suspense as we dont know what the photos are and we dont know why he wants to see them so much.

HOW DOES THE FILM INTRODUCE WHERE AND WHEN THE FILM IS SET?
After the camera takes the photo we soon realise where the film is set. It is set in the Evans County threat management unit. We understand that this is some sort of police station due to this and the badge in the photo as well as the man (who is most probably the main character as the picture below is the first character we see) being questioned by the police (see photo last slide). We assume that the film is set in the 21th century as the camera and the room itself looking quite modern.

The main character? (The first person we see)

HOW DOES THE SEQUENCE INTRODUCE CHARACTERS?

At the beginning of the film we are introduced to two characters. We dont know their names and whilst we do understand that one of them is a police officer we are unsure about what the other character does. The other character however has been introduced by a police profile so therefore he has probably committed a crime of some sort.

One of the characters: the supposed main character of the film

The other character. (the police officer/ interrogator

HOW DOES THE FILM USE TEXT TITLES TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE THEMES OF THE FILM? (HOW DO THEY MOVE, WHAT COLOUR AND FONT HAS BEEN CHOSEN?)
At the very beginning of the film there are a few bits of text that tell the viewer who has made the film and what it is called. These bits of text slide onto the screen like the first screengrab, they are made to look a bit like a slide being put into a camera. The screen then flashes and makes a camera noise to make it seem like a camera has just taken a photo of the text. It then goes red like it is developing. This is to show the viewer that cameras will probably be important in this film.
