Library Highlights
This month we added to our schools Job Corp, the Adopt A-Shelf jobs. Kids can apply for these job openings. They come in twice a week during their lunch, and organize their sections that they are assigned. Nameplates are put on the shelves of these sections to give them a sense of ownership. Other children have seen the nameplates and have expressed interest in Adopting-A-Shelf. It is exciting and I cant wait to see how it grows. The Holiday Book section has been retired. All the books from that section have been put into their respected library book sections. They do have the matching holiday sticker on the spine next to the call number label. There is now a Graphic Novel section. These books seem to be very popular with all age groups in the school and now have a special place in our library. It is marked with a bright green sign. The kids are excited to have them all in one area to find. On September 17th we celebrated the signing of the American Constitution by reading about it. In our monthly feature section of the library, books about the Constitution and our Bill of Rights were highlighted. Much to my delight, kids checked these books out. The classes that had library on that day watched a video on the history of the Constitution. Afterwards, they explained why this day is so important. I hung a few of those papers up on the hallway bulletin board. The kids were very excited to see their work on display.

Focus/Activity
We continued to learn about good manners with library books and within the library. The kids thought of their safe spot for their books in their homes where they could not be damaged. In about the middle of the month, they were able to start checking out their books. We will continue to learn about the treatment of library books and behavior in the library. We focused on library behavior and good manners with our books. Reviewing how to checkout and check in the books helped with book manners. Some of the first graders had library on Constitution Day and were able to learn more about this important day. The 2nd graders continued to learn about all the different sections a library has to offer. It is a whole new world for them and they are soaking up the knowledge like little sponges. They have the checking out process down! We continued to learn about library rules and about the sections of the library. Most of the 3rd graders knew where each section was. They are beginning to understand what the letters and numbers on the book spine mean. They are learning how to use the card catalog to look up books on their own. It is exciting to see their independence growing along with their self-confidence. The focus for this age group was the different sections of the library. For most it was a review so on the last week we were able to start in-depth activities for one section by itself. We reviewed how to use the computer card catalog to look up books in our library. The kids have discovered the power of independence in checking out books. We reviewed sections of the library and how to use our computer card catalog to find books in the library. The last week we started learning in-depth about one section at a time.
