MCAT Scoring

How is the MCAT Scored?

How MCAT Scores are Determined

The MCAT consists of four test sections. The Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences sections contain multiplechoice questions, and the Writing Sample section consists of two essays. Four separate scores are derived from the MCAT, one for each section. The total number of correct questions that you achieve on the multiple-choice sections are calculated by summing the number of questions you answered correctly, with no penalty for incorrect answers. MCAT Practice Online uses the scoring methodology used to determine examinee scores on the national test administration of the MCAT. Estimated scores are determined for the three multiple-choice sections. Writing Samples scores are not provided. The distribution of raw and scaled scores for MCAT Practice Online has been estimated from the performance of examinees who took the questions during previous administrations of the MCAT. The relationship between number correct, scaled scores, and percentile ranks will vary somewhat from one administration to another as the characteristics of the particular examinee population vary.

Scaled Scores
Although all editions of the MCAT measure the same basic skills and concepts, each edition contains different questions. Since one edition may be slightly more difficult or slightly easier than another, it is necessary to convert the total number of correct questions to a scale that takes into account differences in the difficulty of test questions. Regardless of the particular edition used, or the particular administration at which the test is taken, equal scaled scores will represent the same level of skill mastery. The scaled scores used for reporting MCAT range from a low of 1 to a high of 15 for each of the three multiple-choice sections of the test. For example, if your total correct on one section is between 40 and 43, your converted scaled score might be 11. If your total correct ranges from 44 to 46, your converted score might be 12, and so forth. The 15-point scale tends to provide a more stable and accurate assessment of your abilities, since two candidates of equal ability would be expected to get the same scaled score, even though there might be a slight difference in their total correct.

Writing Samples
MCAT Practice Online does not provide estimated scores for the Writing Samples. For the national administration of the MCAT, Writing Sample essays are scored twice on a scale from 1 to 6, and your total raw score is the sum of all four individual scores (i.e. two scores for each of two essays). Your total raw score is then converted to an alphabetic scale ranging from J (lowest) to T (highest). The same alphabetic score can result from different combinations of individual scores. For example, a candidate whose individual scores are 4 and 5 on the first topic and 4 and 4 on the secondfor a score of 17would receive the same alphabetic score as a student who scored 3 and 3 on the first topic and 5 and 6 on the second. Listed below are the typical characteristics of papers receiving each score. Score Typical Characteristics of Essay These essays show clarity, depth, and complexity of thought.
