Math: 4th Grade Multiplication

October 10th, 2013

Common Core State Standards: 4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Procedures: *Have students complete and go over Math Warm Up day 2 using the doc camera * Go over homework by having students share their answers with their elbow buddy. Go over a few problems that students were confused on. * Pull up slide that introduces 3 and 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication using partial products. * Let students practice a few problems in their math journals. Circulate around the room to check for understanding * Pull up slide with story problems in it *Encourage students to use whichever strategy works best for them. * Have students work with their math buddies to solve story problems * Have a few math buddy pairs present share their answers for the story problems. Call on pairs that used different strategies. Highlight that both strategies work for solving multiplication problems. And both strategies focus on decomposing numbers based on their place and value. * Hand out Common Core worksheet. Have students work on it individually to conclude the lesson. Students that are struggling can go to the back table to work with the teacher during this time for additional support. Have base ten blocks available to support learning.

Assessment: Circulation around the room during practice Worksheet will be collected to assess understanding

Differentiation:

*Students that are struggling are provided with extra assistance and support. They also can work with base 10 blocks to have a concrete representation of multiplication * Student with ADD and student with autism will be given more support for completing assignments with periodic check ins. * AIG students will have challenge worksheets to complete if they finish early. These worksheets are given to them from their AIG teacher.
