The

handout in front of you has your opening activity

Read the four sentences on the handout and then

complete the chart underneith.

If

you do not finish the dashes practice in class today, it will need to be finished for homework. Grades will be up to date by Monday.

I will be around to conference while you read.

Today

we will read Mitch Albums editorial article In Living, Keep Your Obituary in Mind
While we read, annotate the text. Underline things

that stand out to you, make notes about what is being said, ask questions, etc.

Dashes

can do two things:

Set off an interrupter To set off a word or phrase from an independent

clause (conclude the sentence)

The

dash can be used to set off an interrupter from the rest of the sentence.

Example: The mother who abused her children

was written about in an unfavorable way.

Dashes

can also be used to set off a concluding element from an independent clause Independent Clause: A phrase that can stand on its own as a sentence
Example: Obituaries should be a place where a

persons life is put into words hopefully these words are positive.

You will now look to Beowulf for examples of how to use dashes.

Use the rest of the time in class today to write your paragraph using the dashes grammar technique you were taught today.
