Waste Management for Organic Waste Proposal = In-Situ Composting Facility

WHAT IS ORGANIC MATERIAL? Anything that was once alive (and which isnt already being recycled), e.g. leftover food, paper sandwich wrappers and bags covered in food, greasy pizza boxes, and anything made from compostable or biodegradable material, such as plant -based cups and containers.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ORGANIC WASTE? The organic waste that will be collected is currently being sent to a landfill. To further reduce our waste footprint, this waste will be separated and sent to a composting facility to become compost. Compost produced from organic waste is rich in nutrients and a great natural soil amendment. Compost is commonly used in farms, gardens, and landscaping which will be helpful since the University of Santo Tomas can utilize this compost in its landscaping and gardening facilities.

WHAT CAN I PUT IN MY ORGANIC WASTE BIN?

All pre-consumer and post-consumer food waste including: Dairy, deli, seafood, bread, frozen food, meat, bones, poultry, produce, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags Wood-Based Products: e.g. Coffee Stirrers, chopsticks, toothpicks, cotton-tips Wet/Soiled Paper: e.g. Waxy beverage cups, sandwich wrappers, placemats, coin wrappers, receipts. Note: Please recycle all dry, clean paper in the blue mixed paper recycling bin Wet/Soiled Cardboard: e.g. Greasy pizza boxes, wet cardboard food containers Paper-Based Materials: e.g. Egg-cartons, fruit trays, napkins, paper-towels, tissues, milk cartons Compostable - Biodegradable - Plant based - Bio based: e.g. Bags, cups, to-go containers, dishware

A900 Rocket Composter

Specifically Designed for the Safe and Hygienic on-site processing of organic wastes, it Provides a sustainable solution for larger organizations or multi-site collections. The A900 Rocket composter is capable of continuously processing up to 5250 litres of organic waste each week. Thermostatic controls automate the process ensuring minimum operator interaction with only a standard single-phase 240-volt power supply needed.

Available as a stationary organic waste solution with the facility for temperature recording and robust construction ensuring longevity, the Rocket range of food waste treatment systems are suitable for the on-site processing of:

Cooked & Uncooked Meat & Fish Cooked & Uncooked Fruit & Vegetables Garden Waste Animal Waste (including some types of bedding)

PROCESS: Both food preparation waste (peelings etc.) and left over food wastes are collected in the buildings using designated bins and tra nsferred to the Rocket by maintenance staff. The Rocket thrives on a 50:50 mix of food waste to wood chip, but paper and cardboards can also be a substitute as media.

The Rocket works by providing optimal conditions that speed up the natural composting process. The food waste and wood chip mix is slowly turned and heated and temperatures are carefully recorded by Sustainability to ensure legislation is adhered to. After 7-10 days immature compost is collected and stored where it is carefully matured for up to 3 weeks before being used by Gardens and Grounds staff.

APPLICATION: Provide Recycling Bins for Organic Materials throughout the Campus Especially in Kitchen and Dining Areas.

Maintenance Staff will collect organic trash to the waste segregation are and then to the A900 Rocket Composter facility for the composting process.

After then composted and fit to be utilized for gardening and landscape, it is then will be used to the trees and plants of the campus for a healthier and more sustainable substitute of fertilizer.

CONCLUSION: With this recycling Method of composting the organic material, we can reduce the amount of trash that will be sent to landfills since majority of the university's trash is composted of paper and organic products, we can reduce the amount of garbage to be sent to landfills by around 30-40%. also these trash are being utilized in-site with a cleaner and more sustainable way.
