This is a one semester integrated-skills English language class that aims at developing the integrated skills of writing, reading, speaking and listening. By the end of the semester students will possess all the critical reading skills necessary not only for reading critically but also for writing argumentative essays objectively. There is also going to be a number of speaking and listening tasks that focus on developing students ability to debate and negotiate; listen attentively and respond respectfully; express ideas, agreeing and disagreeing; and present ideas academically. E learning plays a significant role in this course in the form of one general Advanced Page displaying language input, and critical reading skills, in addition to the individual pages of every instructor for class work, homework and forums. Students are expected to contribute weekly to a minimum number of forum posts and to answer a minimum number of reading articles. The work is kept in a portfolio checked by teachers periodically. Portfolio follow up and feedback is allowed 10-15 minutes at the beginning of each session. Students will write TWO argumentative essays in different writing situations. The first writing is a formative assessment done in a process while students are learning the argumentative writing technicalities. As writing argumentatively necessarily involves some research, students are strongly cautioned against plagiarizing. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence at the BUE, which may lead to total expulsion from the university in extreme cases. Academic honesty and how to avoid plagiarism are covered at the start of the course and throughout.
