ToK Ways of Knowing:

Language

Language
Is not only a way we understand the world, it is also the way we express ourselves, and allow others to understand us. One of the key questions in language is to what extent is our vision of the world limited by the language that we speak

Language can be thought of as a symbol system, engaged in representing the world, capturing and communicating thought and experience.

Language

What is the nature of language?

Language is rule-governed Language is intended Language is creative and openended Language is so much a part of human activity that it is easily taken for granted. The issues related to language and knowledge call for conscious scrutiny in order to recognize its influence on thought and behavior

Language is limited in expressing ideas and communicating thought:

Because different language can means different things. For example: some word in one language which is normal, if we try to explain it in other language it might be rude to say it or too strong that cause problem. One word can have lots of meaning with different expression. Thats why if we try to tell a joke in our language to other people that do not think in the same language as us, they wouldnt take it as a joke. We would be a complete freak to them.

Language is a way in which humans communicate using their vocal chord or body. It is a way of expressing our thoughts, opinions, and feelings to another person. Language has allowed us to develop knowledge by being able to share it through communicating.

Importance of language
Language is what separates us from animals because its a more sophisticated form of communication. Where animals simply make noises and body movements, we have developed the use of many words in addition to body gestures and sounds.

Knowledge Issues
Man is the animal that speaks. Understanding

language is thus the key to understanding man

The Problems with Language

1) Language requires knowledge & context 2)Language is constantly changing and evolving

THEORIES OF LANGUAGE:
1) IMAGE THEORY - the meaning of a word is the mental image that it creates (nonsense words, or just repeating sounds dont create mental images)
