Micah Hyde was sitting and watching
NFL preseason action on the evening of
Aug. 8 when a thought popped into his
head: In about 24 hours, he would be one
of those guys on the TV screen.
It was a weird feeling, he said in a
telephone interview. You play all your life
toward this.
Indeed, Hyde
the skinny youngster
who set 17 Fostoria
High School records
and went on to become
sinewy strong and the
Big Ten defensive back
of the year as a senior
at Iowa was close to
playing his first game
as a cornerback for the
Green Bay Packers.
Yes, those Packers.
The Packers of Bart
Starr, Ray Nitschke,
Paul Hornung, Jim
Taylor, Brett Favre, et
al. The Packers who
so frequently chilled their opponents on
what became widely known as the Frozen
Tundra of Lambeau Field. The Packers for
whom the word dynasty first crept its way
into sports vernacular in reference to the
1960s teams coached by Vince Lombardi.
Other than in the quality of his own play,
there is no next level for Hyde. He made it
to footballs version of The Show.
Its just so unreal to me right now, he
said in an interview in Fostoria prior to
heading to training camp in July. Ive been
there, working with the vets and this and
that, and practicing. But I still wake up and
Im like, Wow, Im truly blessed just by the
fact that Im a Packer. I go back to draft
day and it was a great feeling and I still
have that every day when I wake up and
just think about it.
Draft day was April 27, and the Pack-
ers selected Hyde in the fifth round, 159th
overall. It wasnt long
before he was involved
in a rookie mini-camp
and organized team
activities.
A couple of the
games most notable
stars, quarterback
Aaron Rodgers and
linebacker Clay Mat-
thews III, pl ay in
Green Bay. Hyde said
he had his moment of
being star-struck, but
he knew that had to be
put away quickly.
Ive been around
some pretty good ath-
letes in my life and
gotten to see them play and even talked
to them and stuff like that, so I was kind
of used to it, he said. I definitely wasnt
standing there saying, Oh, my God, thats
Aaron Rodgers. At the same time, to this
day, Im still, Oh, my God, Im a Packer.
Youre kind of like, Wow, Im actually in
the same locker room as these guys Ive
Micah Hyde has come a long way
since his beginnings in Fostoria
... I still wake up and
Im like, Wow, Im truly
blessed just by the fact
that Im a Packer. I go
back to draft day and it
was a great feeling and I
still have that every day
when I wake up and just
think about it.

watched on TV. Its a great feeling.
But after five minutes of being in the
locker room, it was like, Im used to
it.
Its strictly business. And the
thing is, in practice ... it didnt matter
who you were, you were going in
with the ones (first-stringers) ... you
were going against the No. 1 receiver,
against Aaron Rodgers. (Defensive
backs coach Joe Whitt) threw every-
body in there (in OTAs); it was a
mish-mash. I think that helped me out,
too, in just getting used to it just
practicing with them.
Tom Grine, who coached Hyde at
FHS and is now the schools principal,
said he likes the mental approach the
22-year-old has taken into his NFL
opportunity.
I think hes aware of the fact that
there are no guarantees, and thats
a good thing for him, Grine, who
played at Iowa in the 1970s, said. The
thing about him is hes grounded and
focused Hey, Ive got a chance
here. I think I can make it.
Hes always had that tremendous
self-confidence, which I dont think
you can understate. When you get to
that level, or even the Division I (col-
lege) level, if you dont believe in your-
self, if you start doubting yourself, its
going to be a long trip home. Youve
got to believe in yourself. You cant
depend on the coaches to give you that
confidence, or your teammates. Its
got to be from within. You know: Hey,
I belong here. Im not going anywhere.
Im going to make this team. I think
thats a huge advantage for Micah.
Hes so even-keeled. He doesnt get
too high; he doesnt get too low.
Indeed, Hyde, whose friendly
demeanor does not allow him to come
off as cocky, carries the attitude that
at the end of the day, its just football
and Ive been doing it my whole life,
he said.
I know Im a young guy and I have
a lot to learn, but at the end of the day,
(other players) are really good, but
theyre not gods out there or anything,
so I definitely feel I can compete with
them.
Hyde is the third FHS graduate to
reach the NFL in the last 14 years.
Safety Damon Moore, a fourth-round
selection of Philadelphia out of Ohio
State in the 1999 draft, played three
years with the Eagles and one with the
Chicago Bears. Another safety, Rich-
ard Newsome, who played collegiately
at Michigan State, was a member of
the New Orleans Saints in 2001 after
making the team as an undrafted free
agent.
Hydes mother, Pam Moore, who
is married to Damon Moores older
brother Clayton, is happy that her
child has a chance to do something
to which hes long aspired.
Of course its exciting, but I know
that ultimately hes got to make the
team, she said.
The first NFL cutdown date was
Tuesday. The final one will be Sat-
urday. The Packers will open their
season Sept. 8 on the road against the
NFC champion San Francisco 49ers,
to whom Green Bay lost in the playoffs
last season.
I guess I just take it day by day,
Pam Moore said. People ask me the
same question all the time, but I feel
like he is so fortunate to have this
happening in his life. Of course, hes
living his dream right now. But even
if he didnt make the team or what-
ever, what a great start in life. I look
at that. Hes doing something that so
many young boys dream of doing and
getting a good start. I guess the main
focus for me is I want my child to be
happy and healthy. I just want him to
have a successful life, regardless of
whether its this or that or whatever
it is. Its exciting, but at the same time
I think Im pretty clearheaded about it,
and if the time comes that he makes
the team and hes able to play, Ill be
thrilled for him.
While Hyde was a standout high
school performer in football, base-
ball and basketball, his first love was
soccer. His travel-team sidekick in
that sport at a young age was Aaron
Craft, who moved from Fostoria to
Findlay as a sixth-grader and has
since become a standout point guard
for Ohio States basketball team. Hyde
first latched onto football as a seventh-
grader.
We always had these real good
travel teams, Hyde said. It wasnt
like going into seventh-grade football
I didnt know anything about football.
But I always enjoyed soccer. I loved
it, but they didnt have a school team
and obviously footballs a big sport
here and I definitely wanted to play
football, too.
I grew up here and knew about
the state championship teams and I
grew up with Theo (Grine), so coach
Grine (Theos uncle) was always
around. I knew I wanted to play for
him. I think Id have definitely played
football, but if soccer was in the spring
maybe I wouldnt have played baseball
or something like that.
Organized sports werent all that
Hyde played as a youngster. As Grine
has often lamented, children of recent
times seem less likely to play infor-
mal sports outside in their free time
thereby developing physical skills
as they are to sit down with video
games.
That wasnt Hydes way, though.
He was more old school.
I cant tell you how crazy it was,
the stuff we used to do, he said. We
used to just go find a field and put
shoes out as end zones. It was Hydes,
Munozes, Crafts, Dieblers, Cousins,
Grines. ... It literally had to be dark,
for us not to see the football, to stop

Though the roster size remains
modest, it may be something to build
on for St. Wendelin.
After a few years of their players
numbering in the low teens and inju-
ries prompting the cancellations of a
few games, the Mohawks enter the
2013 season the schools 90th
with a roster of 21.
The key to the influx is a freshman
class of 12 that will blend in with six
seniors, two juniors and a sophomore.
Certainly, it will be a baptism of fire
for the youngsters, but second-year
coach Jim Bodart likes the guidance
theyre getting from the experienced
upperclassmen, along with the pros-
pects for this season and the direction
the program may be taking.
Hopefully, were in a turnaround,
Bodart said. Thats what were trying
to pursue. Weve got a lot of learning
to do, but I think well have the oppor-
tunity to put some Ws after the names
on the schedule.
St. Wendelin is entering its second
full season as a member of the Michi-
gan-based Christian Athletic League
of America, which mainly includes
teams composed of youngsters who
are homeschooled or who attend
schools that do not offer football.
Their rosters sizes are comparable to
that of the Mohawks.
They are very well-disciplined
teams, Bodart said. You can tell that
the coaching staffs take the time to
teach them fundamentals. You dont
see a lot of fancy offense from them,
and I dont mean that in a derogatory
manner. Thats actually complimen-
tary in my eyes because I think some-
times as coaches we get too caught up
in the Xs and Os and not as much in
the lets go play a game.
The Mohawks posted a 2-5 record
last season, with their wins coming
in the last two games of the season.
Those two contests saw St. Wende-
lin, which had seen its 14-man roster
whittled by injuries, claim victories
in eight-player games permitted by
the CALA.
This years numbers wouldnt
appear to put eight-man games in
the outlook, and Bodart looks for his
club to be competitive in conventional

COACH: Jim Bodart, 2nd year
(2-5)
LAST YEAR: 2-5
LAST LEAGUE TITLE: 1991
OFFENSIVE SCHEME: Pistol

DEFENSIVE SCHEME: 4-4
STRENGTHS: Bodart speaks
quite highly of a six-man senior
class that has
persevered
through tough
times and is
proving helpful
to a 12-player
group of fresh-
man that will
provide depth
that hasnt been
present in recent
years. Experi-
ence should help
in the transi-
tion from a big-play offense to one
based on ball control.
WEAKNESSES: With fresh-
men composing 57 percent of
the 21-man roster, theyll have
to grow up quickly and learn on
the fly in order to give at least an
occasional rest to upperclassmen
who will be relied upon heavily
in all phases of the game. At least
nine players may rarely come off
the field.

OFFENSE
According to guard Trent
Whetsel: I think well do a little
more running this year and try to
power through and just kind of basi-
cally put the ball down their throats.
We all have heart and were all here
to win and, of course, to win you
have to have touchdowns.
DEFENSE
According to linebacker Cole
Williams: It all depends on the
players intensity and I hope that
each of our players plays with a big
heart. We all want to win, so hope-
fully were all aggressive.
Bodart hopes things are on the
move in terms of numbers with
a freshman class of 12 bolster-
ing this years roster to 21. The
numbers will help St. Wendelin
practice more effectively, which
should translate well in terms of
execution. While Bodart is pleased
with the leadership provided by his
seniors, some will have to step up
in production to compensate for
the graduation losses of skill play-
ers such as Zach Miller and Austin
Reinhart.

contests at the same time that the
younger players gain experience and
all players get a chance to rest.
It does make for good competi-
tion, Bodart said of the CALA. I
think this season, were young but
weve got much better numbers and
I think thats going to give us some
opportunities in games that maybe
we didnt have last year. The kids
were in great shape, but any time you
ask a kid to perform for four quarters
in the games of football, both sides
of the ball, kickoffs, punt returns and
everything, youre asking a lot.
I think in those last few games,
where we had the opportunity to play
8-on-8 with the CALA allowing us to
do that, that gave us equal numbers
where we had a few kids on the side-
lines and we could sub a coach
them up on the sideline and send
them back in kind of thing.
While Bodart expects the entire
roster to be involved on game nights,
certain players will still be counted
on in every regard, injuries remain a
part of the sport and the coach wants
everyone to be ready to do whatever
is necessary.
As we went through camp and
that first week of double-session con-
ditioning, about Thursday everybody
was getting tired of conditioning,
Bodart said. Everybody does get
tired of conditioning. I took a minute
away from our running and condi-
tioning and pulled them into a quick
huddle and I started by asking one by
one, How many plays were you off
the field last year? A lot of times you
will hear kids at other schools talk
about playing all but 10 plays. Thats
a lot of plays for high school kids. You
run through that list of six seniors
and you can probably count on two
hands the number of plays they were
off the field last year.
The big thing for me was to give
these freshmen a wakeup call that we
do all of this because on game night
you may play the whole game. Theres
no two-platoon, theres no offensive
group and defensive group. This year,
it should change a little bit, obviously.
We should get some opportunities to
get some kids off the field. But actu-
ally, nine kids are going to carry the
brunt of this team and were going
to have to mix in some freshmen to
make this whole thing happen.
The improved numbers wil l
helped the Mohawks in practice as
the season goes along. Unlike in
recent years, 11-on-11 sessions essen-
tially are possible.
Thats going to make the prac-
tices much more productive, Bodart
said. Last year with the numbers
we had, we practiced what I call
half-line. Wed go center on over on
one side of the ball then youd flip
and youd do the other half center on
over. Granted, you get a lot of good
reps that way. Its a quicker process.
Youre not dealing with the back
side of the line. But in turn, you lose
that back side of the line, downfield-
blocking practice, things like that. It
becomes a lot more difficult to get
in. This year, were going to be able
to get some nice looks at kids and
what theyre doing on the back side
of the play.
Bodart said he and his staff have
received plenty of help in team man-
agement from the six seniors.
Every single one of them deserves
the title of team captain, he said.
They all lead in their own different
way, but they all take charge.
Bodart wants his f reshman
class, almost all of whom attended
the lower grades at St. Wendelin,
to absorb what they learn from the
upperclassmen and carry it forward
toward building strength for the pro-
gram.
Its a good group of kids, he said
of the freshmen. Theyre very close-
knit. I think you get that here at St.
Wendelin, even more than at most
schools. You get a pretty tight bond
of kids just because the classes are
so small.
Lost to graduation are big-armed
quarterback Zach Miller and speedy
running back Austin Reinhart, who
has gone on to play at John Carroll
University.
Bodart expects this years club to
be steady if unspectacular.
Were a pretty fundamentally
sound group, he said. I dont think
were going to have the passing attack
we had last year, with the ability to
throw the big ball. But I think its
really going to set up to be a sound,
ball-control type of team.
Theyre persistent. Theyre the
type of kids who are going to go to
work very blue collar. Were going
to be pounding the ball at people. I
think we have the ability to be more
physical than we have been in the
past. And with the little bit of depth
were developing here and getting
some rest for some of these kids, I
think its going to give us the oppor-
tunity to really have a ball-control
type of offense. With the type of
kids weve got and the discipline
they demonstrate, well be able to
play sound defense and control the
ball on offense.
Taking over at quarterback will be
senior Brad Buhrow, though fresh-
man Cyle Smith could enter the con-
versation when hes fully recovered
from an injury.
We may make some changes
there as we go forward, but (Buhrow)
is a great athlete and I trust him, and
those are two things you need at
quarterback, in my opinion, Bodart
said.
Senior fullback Brady Rutter will
get a number of carries after impress-
ing Bodart in 2012 in his return to
football after not having played since
his junior-high years. Senior Cole
Williams and freshman Joel Lopez
look to be the wingbacks with junior
Donovan Scudder at tight end and
sophomore Justin Walter at split end.
Junior Rob Park will center an
offensive line that will also include
seniors Caleb Colburn and A. J.
Turner at the tackles and senior
Trent Whetsel and freshman Devin
Frankart, a transfer from New Riegel,
at the guards.
The Mohawks will line up Fran-
kart and Park at the defensive tack-
les and Colburn and Turner at the
defensive guards in their 4-4 align-
ment. Buhrow, Whetsel, Williams
and Scudder will be the linebackers.
Rutter and Lopez will be the corner-
backs and Walter will be the safety.
Bodart said he wont project a
won-lost record against competi-
tion that, in addition to the CALA
schools, will include Arcadia, Cory-
Rawson and Hardin Northern from
the Blanchard Valley Conference. But
he expects the senior class to lead
an effort in which the Mohawks put
their best foot forward.
I talk a lot about the tradition of
St. Wendelin football, Bodart said.
This is the 90th season of St. Wen-
delin football; we say, Continue the
tradition, keep it moving forward.
This is a great program to be a part
of. Those (seniors) are a great exam-
ple of that. There have been some
pretty lean years around here.
I think its great that weve got
this young freshman class for these
seniors. Its a great group of kids for
us to say, All right, Ive got these 12
kids who are going to be here for the
next four years and theyre going
to learn great things from a senior
class who will show them the way
to become a St. Wendelin Mohawk
football player.

Fostoria High School coach Jim
Kelly is all about the process.
As the Redmen near the start of the
2013 campaign, he is focusing on what
he and his staff need to do to restore
the program to its winning ways.
After posting an 0-10 mark last
season in his first year with the team,
Kelly admitted that at times it was a
struggle to get maximum effort from
his players. He said the offseason has
brought an increase in weight room
attendance and the players are start-
ing to see the value of their investment
in the program.
Week 10 last year, we talked about
we have to become mentally and
physically tough back to the days
of how it used to be here, he said.
And its easy to say those things, but
it takes time to do it. We still have a
ways to go. Thats the approach weve
taken and just getting guys to under-
stand theyve got to buy in and when
theyre here, theyre investing time.
When you invest something, it means
more to you. Thats where were at and
were taking steps, definitely in the
right direction.
Kelly has history working both
for and against him. The FHS foot-
ball program is steeped in tradition,
which brings certain expectations
every year, even though it has fallen
on hard times in recent years.
The Redmen are 8-32 over their
last four seasons since going 10-2 and
advancing to the second round of the
state playoffs in 2008 under the lead-
ership of All-Ohio senior Micah Hyde,
who is now a defensive back for the
Green Bay Packers.
Winning takes care of many things
and Kelly realizes that. He also under-
stands that before his team can walk,
it will first have to crawl.
The first thing is winning breeds
success, he said. We know we need
to win. That takes time, but we are
making some strides there. Our goal
is to be competitive. Our goal is to be
physically tough with anybody we play
and that takes time, but were getting

If we have a mistake on defense,

Improvement will be key for
the Redmen in Kellys second year
at the helm. While he admits the
team is ahead of where it was last
year, it is going to take time to
restore the program to its former
winning ways. A tough start to
the season with 2012 regional
runner-up Ottawa- Glandorf at
home, followed by three straight
road games, will show Kelly just
how physically and mentally tough
his team actually is.

stands that before his team can walk,
it will first have to crawl.
The first thing is winning breeds
success, he said. We know we need
to win. That takes time, but we are
making some strides there. Our goal
is to be competitive. Our goal is to be
physically tough with anybody we play
and that takes time, but were getting
there.
So far this season, Kelly has seen a
difference in his team. The time spent
in the weight room has helped some
take ownership in the program and
made them want to work harder to
make the group successful.
I think there is the accountabil-
ity (this year), Kelly said. You have
to be in the weight room because
you have to train to prevent injuries
and to get stronger and to get faster.
The commitment part and just being
accountable of being there is probably
the biggest thing. I think because of
the accountability, were more disci-
plined, too.
Offensively, FHS will have a dif-
ferent look than it has had in recent
years. After averaging just 7.9 points
per game in 2012 and being shut out
three times, the Redmen will transi-
tion from a pass-heavy, spread scheme
into a base I-formation team and be
much more run-dominant.
Kelly, who ran the I-formation
during his time as head coach at
Lakota prior to taking the reins at
FHS, said the decision to switch was
due to a change in personnel and to
align the scheme with his personal
philosophy as a coach.
Were going to be an I team, he
said. We kind of finished the year
with that last year. Again, its physical
football. For us, we feel like weve got
guys that we can run the ball with and
throw the ball out of that. Thats who
we are; thats Fostoria football.
The theme for us is physical.
Weve got to learn how to be physi-
cal. Some weeks we may not be where
I want us to be, but were going to get
there and over time thats where we
have to be.
Senior Deante Lincoln welcomes
the change on the offensive side of the
ball. The 6-foot, 255-pound tackle said
the run game was almost non-existent
last year and the team had to hang
its hat on passing, which put more
pressure on the offensive line in pass
protection.
Were mainly going to run, Lin-
coln said. Our teams a lot better from
last year. Were more disciplined.
Our offensive line, its going to
look pretty good this year. Were
more disciplined. Were not going to
have the quarterback hit that many
times. Youre going to see a lot more
running.
Juniors dominate the skill posi-
tions on the offensive side of the ball.
Dom Fuller will be under center for
the Redmen in his first year as the
full-time starter. Alex Navarro and
Maurice Haskins will start in the
backfield, with Juan Mendez and
Deandre Cannon getting the nod at
the wide receivers and Eric Struble
anchoring the tight end spot.
FHS will be young up front, with
freshman Gage Scott starting at
right guard and sophomores Brystan
Baeder and Gabe Thompson starting
at center and right tackle, respec-
tively. The left side will be handled
by seniors Micah Randall at tackle
and Caleb Peace at guard.
Defensively, the Redmen are going
to stay in the 50 front they utilized
last season. Despite giving up 46.4
points per game and allowing 60 or
more four times, Kelly said the 50 is
in line with the type of football team
he wants to have: physical.
We actually run the old Fostoria
50, he said. One of the things thats
great is everybody around here, all
my junior high coaches, my varsity
coaches, they all love it. Especially
the kids because its Fostoria. Its
an attacking defense that gets after
people and thats what were going to
develop to be.
A major change in the defense this
year has been a transformation in
attitude from what it was last season,
according to Navarro. Navarro, a
5-11, 220-pound linebacker, said the
defense has been more of a unit and is
working better together to keep each
other up and not allow negativity to
break them down.
Defensively were doing better,
Navarro said. This year, everyones
focused. Theyre giving their all. We
help each other if we have a mistake.
If we have a mistake on defense, every-
one keeps their heads up.
Overall, our defense is getting
better each day and every day. We
have some freshmen, some sopho-
mores. Were a young team defensively
and offensively, but other than that
our players are working hard. Theyre
not showing any weaknesses. Even
the freshmen, theyre stepping up a
lot. Were trying to build this program
back up.

Sophomores J. J. Ful ler and
Rolando Silva will anchor the middle
of the defense as the linebackers.
Cannon and freshman Jayden Stanton
will be the cornerbacks, while Fuller
and Mendez shore up the back end of
the unit as the safeties.
In addition to physicality offen-
sively and defensively, Kelly and his
staff are coaching effort more than
ever. He said that because of the
investment so many of the players
have made, it makes it harder for them
to quit and harder to give less than
their best effort.
In order for the Redmen to continu-
ally improve on a consistent basis, he
said the players have to be willing to
sacrifice for the good of the team.
Effort, he said of what held FHS
back at times last season. And the
second answers effort and the third
answers effort. Our effort was not
where it needed to be.
I think it comes down to this: If
you put, again, time into this thing,
then when it gets tough in games you
still fight and you still give effort. We
cannot quit. Its physically and men-
tally tough, no quit, and thats the kind
of teams were going to have here. No
matter how long it takes, were going
to get it the way we need it.
O v e r -
all, Kelly is
pleased with
the progress
his team has
made si nce
the end of the
2012 season.
However, he
is by no means
satisfied. He
knows it will
take wins to
restore the
pride of Fos-
toria Redmen
football. Until his team is ready to
handle the responsibility of carrying
on that tradition, he expects to see
some simple things from them.
They have to believe in each
other, he said. I expect my team to
play physical, to play hard, to give
great effort no matter what is thrown
at them during the game. I expect
them not to get down. I expect people
to be proud of our effort, going out and
just being physical.
Weve got to move forward in the
beliefs we have, which are getting
mentally and physically tough and just
stay at it day after day. Be patient, but
be firm about, Hey this is where were
going and this is where were headed
no matter how long it takes. Were
going to get there. It takes time, but
thats what well do.

ARCADIA Nearly every foot-
ball team has to overcome adversity of
some kind at some point in a season.
One would think Arcadias luck
would run a little better in 2013 after
the amount of adversity it faced last
season, but injuries suffered by two
key players in the teams first scrim-
mage let it know that wouldnt be the
case.
The Redskins faced adversity in
many ways last season, from losing
16 seniors from the previous years
team that qualified for the Division VI
playoffs to getting a new head coach
only 1 months before the season
started. Still, they rallied to learn a
new system and finished with a 4-6
overall record, including 3-6 in the
Blanchard Valley Conference.
Second-year coach Pat Gehrisch
wanted his players to be confident last
year despite their obvious obstacles,
and he was backed up in that venture
by senior quarterback Casey Mock.
Losing a standout such as Mock
was going to be an obstacle for Arca-
dia as it was, but the story took on
a new twist when sophomore Chad
Baker, the leading candidate to suc-
ceed Mock as Arcadias triggerman,
suffered a broken leg and senior
Sawyer Kieffer, the teams top return-
ing receiver, went down with a knee
injury. Kieffer should eventually be
back in action.
Even had Baker stepped right in as
quarterback, Gerisch wanted to see a
change in the Redskins offense.
Gehrisch plans to stick with the
spread offense, but he aims to have a
more balanced attack.
Last year we found ourselves
throwing the ball out of necessity a
lot, Gehrisch said. We want to run
the ball more, but well try to run the
ball out of the spread.
Kieffer would have been next in
line to play quarterback after Baker,
but the Redskins will likely now turn
to freshman Austin Bohn or junior
Dillon Conine, a late arrival to the
team in the summer. Kieffer could
still see action under center.
Kieffer was Arcadias No. 2 receiver

GOOD LUCK
ROYALS
By MICHAEL BURWELL
STAFF WRITER
BLOOMDALE For Elmwood
football head coach Brian Cooper, its
all about having confidence heading into
the 2013 season.
After finishing 4-6 and 2-5 in the
Northern Buckeye Conference last
season, Cooper hopes to change the
Royals mentality of were supposed
to lose anyway that has plagued the
team in recent years.
Weve always had the kids in the
right positions, I believe, but its always
been a here we go again mentality, so
thats where I would say our biggest
concern is right now. Whats going to
happen if a team scores on us first?
Whats going to happen if we make
a mistake first? said Cooper, who is
entering his second season at Elmwood.
The Royals have several players
returning from last season who can
help change that mindset and instill
confidence in a team that hasnt had a
winning record since 2008.
Senior wide receiver Aaron Arnold
(6-foot-5, 200 pounds) brings size and
experience to a young offense.
Hes always had the ability, but
Ive seen a confidence in him kind of
grow and really take charge of hey,
if the balls within five feet of me, Im
going to be the only one to come up with
it, Cooper said.
Arnold compiled 177 receiving yards
on eight receptions last year, along with
three touchdowns. As a sophomore, he
was second on the team in rushing
and receiving yards with 355 and 235,
respectively.
During the summer, Arnold com-
peted in the National Football League
High School Player Development 7-on-7
tournament for the Cleveland Browns.
He advanced through regional qualify-
ing in Defiance and Cleveland before
making the final roster, which competed
against teams from around the country.
I think that helped him realize
that Im not just small-town Elmwood
anymore, Cooper said. I can still do
some things and, hopefully, I can kind
COACH: Brian Cooper (2nd
year, 4-6).
LAST YEAR: 4-6 overall, 2-5
Nortern Buckeye Conference.
LAST LEAGUE TITLE: 2006.
OFFENSIVE SCHEME: Pistol.
DEFENSIVE SCHEME: 4
Front.
STRENGTHS: Aaron Arnold.
The 6-5,
200-pound
receiver will
be a big part
of Elmwoods
scoring attack
this season.
With his size
and experi-
ence, Elmwood
will have a
go-to receiver
to help their
sophomore
quarterback. Big players along
the offensive and defensive line
return as well.
WEAKNESSES: The offensive
backfield is young. Sophomore
Nick Gillett will be the field
general, and hell have two junior
running backs with limited
experience helping him out. The
change to a 4-front defense from
a 3-5 last season might cause
concern early as well.

OFFENSE
According to wide receiver
Aaron Arnold: This year, I think
we have a stronger running game.
Weve got probably two of the
better running backs in the league.
We have a lot of speedy guys on the
outside that can get the ball and
make things happen.
DEFENSE
According to defensive nose
tackle Sawyer Haines: Condi-
tioning is going to be a big deal
since were playing both sides of
the ball. But its really important
that we get penetration.
If the Royals can utilize their
weapons on offense and protect
their young backfield, they can
become a force in the Northern
Buckeye Conference. The offen-
sive and defensive lines should be
Elmwoods bread and butter, but
fatigue could become a factor late
in games due to the number of play-
ers going both ways. A strong non-
conference start could boost the
Royals confidence heading into
conference play.

According to receiver Nick

be determined by how we play
together as a team. Everybody
points to the guys we lost (gradu-

DEFENSE
According to nose guard
Andy Strzesynski: We have to
be aggressive, use our quickness
and swarm to the ball. We dont
have any superstars on this team.
Its going to take a team effort.
Findlay cant just reload, not
after losing the arsenal of offen-
sive skill and talent the Trojans
displayed last season. But Ritzler
and his staff dont use the word
rebuild either. The schedule got
tougher and a Findlay team short
on varsity experience will have to
grow up fast under the Friday night
lights. But theres a lot of compe-
tition for playing time, and that
overall depth could translate into
a competitive if not overpowering
team on the field.

FOR THE REVIEW TIMES
FINDLAY The names and
faces change as players come and go
through the ranks of Findlay Highs
football program.
But as far as Mark Ritzler is con-
cerned, some things are forever con-
stant.
A lot of things change from year to
year, but our goals remain the same,
Ritzler said.
Our job is to go out there and try
to do the best job we can, compete as
well as we can and try to win football
games. Its Friday night football, so
there really are no moral victories.
If ever there was a season when
Ritzler might be tempted to temper
expectations, this would be it.
Graduation hit the team hard,
costing the Trojans 19 of 22 starters
and 27 total players from a skilled
and talented class that went 10-1,
won a Three Rivers Athletic Confer-
ence championship and qualified for
the Division I playoffs in 2011, then
became the first team in school his-
tory to average more than 50 points
a game during last years 8-2 season.
Six of those players earned All-
Ohio honors. Headlining that group
was record-setting running back
Vance Settlemire, who set single-sea-
son (1,934 yards, 33 TDs) and career
(3,260, 53 TDs) marks for yards rush-
ing and touchdowns.
Settlemire and triple threat Joseph
Davidson, who intercepted six passes
and had 32 tackles on defense, caught
19 passes for 392 yards and six TDs,
and earned a scholarship from Bowl-
ing Green State University for his
punting ability (37.2 avg.), were sec-
ond-team all-state selections.
University of Toledo recruit
Austin Niswander (30 tackles, 206
yards receiving, 100 rushing), Notre
Dame baseball signee Jimmy Orwick
(33 catches, 677 yards, 6 TDs) and
four-year linebacker Devin Dennard,
the Trojans leader in career tackles,
were third-team All-State, and offen-
sive lineman Bryce Burnside earned
special mention All-Ohio.
Ritzler, though, is not one to lower
the bar.
We talked to the kids in January,
and one thing we said was we are not
going to use the word rebuild, Rit-
zler said.
Were not going in thinking, Lets
Standards

2012 season was a roller coaster ride,
to put it mildly.
With one of the best offensive play-
ers in the Midland Athletic League in
Mark Bouillon, the Chieftains found
themselves in contention to win many
of their games, but in regard to the
ones that got away, one or two plays
per outing defined their entire season.
They finished with a disappoint-
ing 4-6 record overall and just 3-4 in
the MAL. However, a new season has
arrived in 2013 and the mission is to
move on.
There were a lot of moments
during last season where it was criti-
cal that we maintained control of the
ball, H-L coach Jeremy Nutter said.
We just had that critical turnover or
you just didnt get enough for the first
down. Also, defensively, more often
than not we just didnt make enough
plays when we needed to. We looked
back at last season and we will learn
from it.
The fourth-year coach has to come
up with some answers on the offensive
side of the ball, as the Chieftains lost
Bouillon and quarterback Alec Gregg,
along with seven other seniors.
Bouillon led the Chieftains in offen-
sive production, tallying more than
1,500 yards of total offense with 18
touchdowns.
You dont replace a Mark Bouil-
lon, its just tough to do, Nutter said.
You take the pieces you have and we
do what our kids are good at. I think
we do have some talent on this team
this year, though.
The talent he is speaking of begins
with the ground game, as senior tackle
Weston Hill (6-foot-4, 275 pounds)
and senior center Adam Foos (5-11,
220) will bolster a big, physical group
up front trying to open holes for senior
tailback Cody Malone.
Joining Hill and Foos will be junior
Christian Potteiger at center with
senior Wesley Armon at guard and
sophomore LRay Burns at tackle.

OFFENSE
According to tackle Weston
Hill: We just have to know our
assignments, get going and be
hard-nosed and we will be all right
this season.
DEFENSE
According to safety Eli
Tooker: We have to make the
right reads just get your guy.
If its run, come up and if its pass,
drop back into the right spots.
The Chieftains could very well
have enough talent to contend for
a Midland Athletic League title,
but they will have to answer ques-
tions of depth, the passing game
and taking care of the football with
a young squad.

According to tight end Jack
Raymond: I think passings going
to be a big part. ... The line is open-
ing up holes and protecting really
well up front so weve got every-
thing we need.

According to defensive

think thats really going to help us
contain and keep everything into
our big guys.
The Raiders look to take a
step forward in year two of Vodi-
kas reign. A large contingent of
seniors has brought a change in
attitude and discipline has been
much improved so far this season,
according to several players. A new
offense will aim to showcase play-
ers strengths and several freshmen
will get the opportunity to prove
themselves at the varsity level and
could make key contributions. A
favorable non-conference schedule
could help build confidence early in
the season.

KANSAS In his second year
at the helm of the Lakota football
program, Dave Vodika has noticed a
major change among his players.
Those returning from last years
squad and the ones joining for the first
time have come equipped with a dif-
ferent mentality this season, or as he
calls it, a different attitude.
After a 2-8 season in 2012, Vodika
is still in the process of changing the
losing culture that had beset Lakota
over the past several seasons. The
Raiders are 3-27 since 2010 and have
lost 23 straight Midland Athletic
League games dating back to 2009.
Despite those numbers being
stacked against him, Vodika said he
has seen a different side of his team
this summer that has not been there
in the past.
Overall, I would say I can take
these guys and push them ten times
harder than before, he said. Every-
bodys willing to say OK, if they say
we can do this we must be able to do
it. Attitude-wise, Im just so very, very
pleased.
It is not just the head coach who
feels that way either. Players are
starting to see the difference in their
teammates and themselves, and its
instilling confidence that things can
change.
Its probably the attitude, senior
Jack Raymond said about the differ-
ence between previous teams and
the 2013 squad. A couple years ago,
we werent able to condition like we
should have. Everybody had a bad
attitude. Now were working hard and
coach is making sure of that. And I
think now were actually ... starting to
enjoy it because we know its going to
help us. Its not just to punish us, its
to make us better.
One thing working in the Raiders
favor is a large senior class. Although
there are just 23 players listed on the
roster, 10 of them will play their final
season this fall.
Lakota will start eight seniors on
offense and six on defense to bolster
units that were some of the worst sta-
tistically in the MAL last season. The
team finished last in total offense and
next-to-last in total defense a year ago.
Colin Timmons returns at quar-
terback after throwing for 234 yards
and three touchdowns with one inter-
ception in limited time under center
in 2012. Kyle Below, Mac Flanagan,
Jordan Smith and Bobby Arriaga
bring experience to the offensive line,
while Raymond will anchor the tight

COACH: Todd Fox, 4th year

LAST YEAR: 7-5 overall, 5-2
Midland Athletic League
LAST TITLE: 2008 (tie)
OFFENSIVE SCHEME: Spread
DEFENSIVE SCHEME: 4-2-5
STRENGTHS: The Senecas are
experienced on both sides of the
ball. The entire
offensive line
returns, as does
quarterback
Tyler Long and
nine starters on
defense, includ-
ing All-Ohio
tackle Marcus
Somers. The
team also
boasts plenty
of depth at all
positions, a
welcome change from last season
when the Senecas began the year
with just one returning starter.
WEAKNESSES: According to
Fox, the teams biggest weakness
is that the players are too critical
of themselves. If they have a bad
practice, Fox says he finds the
coaching staff picking up the
kids spirits rather than yelling,
which is an unusual situation to
say the least.
By SHANNON DOVE
SPORTS WRITER
TIFFIN After this school year,
the Midland Athletic League will
cease to exist. Tiffin Calvert coach
Todd Fox would like to see his Sen-
ecas claim the final league title.
And he just may have the personnel
to do so.
The Senecas return nine starters
on both offense and defense, includ-
ing All-Ohio defensive tackle Marcus
Somers (6-foot-1, 208 pounds), quar-
terback Tyler Long and the entire
offensive line.
Im biased, but we return all
five starting offensive linemen, plus
the main two substitutes, so thats a
strength, Fox said. But again, Tyler
Long at quarterback and our receiving
corps and their ability, we feel pretty
strong on offense, that we can do a lot
of great things. But Id say any time
you can bring (back) a whole offensive
line, youre pretty lucky.
Fox is in his fourth year of coaching
the Senecas, who compiled a 7-5 over-
all record last year with a 5-3 mark to
finish third in the MAL. Calvert has
also made back-to-back playoff appear-
ances after an eight-year absence from
the postseason and Fox said the play-
ers especially the seniors are
ready to make a deep playoff run.
This is the fourth year for this
group, Fox said of his senior class.
We just feel that the systems in, there
are really no excuses. We know what
were doing and we just continue to
get better, keep our goals high, keep
working hard.
This is a special group that we
had a great offseason with and were
excited.
Somers, a four-year starter, is
a guard on the offensive line and a
tackle on defense. Hell be joined
by junior center Matt Iannantuono,
junior guard Cameron Felter, senior
tackles Austin Perry and Aaron Engle-
hart on the offensive line.
Our whole offensive line is return-
ing from last year. We have a year
under our belts and we should be a
lot better, Somers said.
Marcus started as a freshman for
us, so we knew then he was a special
player, Fox said of Somers. Hes that
quiet leader. He doesnt say much, but
everybody knows that what Marcus
says or does goes. Hes kind of that
catalyst, but hes surrounded by a lot
of other great leaders.
That senior class is not large with
six seniors. Its just they know what to
do, they know how to work together
and everybody follows. Its a special

According to wide receiver
Dan Reineke: I think getting the
pass game down. We have an all
new receiving corps this year, no
returning receivers. Were coming
along really well. Everyone knows
what theyre doing, knows their
plays, so were looking good.
DEFENSE
According to defensive
tackle Marcus Somers: Speed.
Everyones fast: D-line, backs, safe-
ties, were all pretty fast.
Calvert has what every coach
wishes he could have each season:
Plenty of experience, depth and
talent at all positions. There wont
be much of a learning curve for the
players and theyll be expected to
open the season strong and carry
that momentum throughout the
year, culminating in what the team
hopes will be a deep playoff run.
As long as they avoid injuries, the
Senecas will be a team to be reck-
oned with.

LAST YEAR: 11-1 overall, 5-0
Northern Ohio League
LAST TITLE: 2012
OFFENSIVE SCHEME: One-

DEFENSIVE SCHEME: 4-4
STRENGTHS: It seems as if
strength and

among Colum-

every year and
this season will
be no different
in that regard.
The Tornadoes
are big and
strong up front,
with most of

WEAKNESSES: The Tornadoes
are relatively inexperienced in
the offensive backfield and at the
wide receiver spots, so some of
the offense will be learn-as-you-

According to tackle Isiah
Moore: Its like our brothers out
there. Were all fighting for that
one goal and thats to get that ring,
go 15-0.
DEFENSE
According to linebacker
Ryan Lynch: Stopping the run
game. You wont be able to pass
on us either, but the run game is
probably our main focus. A lot of
schools dont really pass the ball as
much as they run, so thats what
youve got to focus on.
The sting of an early playoff exit
last season is still fresh with this
Tornadoes team and it would love
nothing more than to erase that
memory with a strong playoff run.
That determination, mixed with a
healthy amount of talent, should be
good to make Columbian a force
again this season.

TIFFIN After running the table
undefeated in the regular season and
capturing the Northern Ohio League
championship last fall, Tiffin Colum-
bian was poised for a deep playoff run.
But the Tornadoes hopes flew
away with the Eagles in a 24-14 loss
to Avon in the second round of the
Division II postseason, a bitter disap-
pointment thats still fresh.
Its one that coach Brian Colatrug-
lio and his players hope to wipe from
their memories with a significant
playoff showing this season and, just
maybe, a state championship.
Its part of being a part of Tiffin
Columbian football, Colatruglio
said. Thats whats expected. Youre
expected to contend for champion-
ships and make the playoffs, and this
year will be no different. Well have
those same expectations.
But its also the beauty of high
school football because every teams
different. Every year is a different
year. You cant think Well, because
we were good last year, were going
to be good this year. Its a completely
different, new group of guys. Your
team takes on the personality of your
seniors.
This years seniors want to win.
Obviously, get past that, senior
running back Ryan Lynch said of last
season. Try and go undefeated in
the whole season, not just the regular
season.
Fifteen and oh, senior offensive
tackle Isiah Moore added.
Thats our goal, Lynch finished.
Lynch and Moore are the anchors
of an experienced Columbian offense
and the Tornadoes would be hard-
pressed to find two better candidates
to lead the team. Lynch is a four-year
starter at running back who earned
All-NOL second team and All-North-
west Ohio District honorable mention
accolades last year as a junior. He was
also a first-team All-NOL defensive
player at linebacker.
Moores credentials are even more
impressive: first team All-Ohio offen-
sive lineman, Northwest Ohio Dis-
trict Offensive Lineman of the Year
and spots on the first team all-district
and All-NOL offenses.
Hes that good because hes a
worker, Colatruglio said of Moore.
He works his technique, hard in

VAN BUREN One quick look at
the schedule and its clear the Van Buren
coaching staff is sending a firm, direct
message to the players.
Its time for the next step.
Gone is the cupcake season opener,
replaced by Ottawa Hills. The Green
Bears were a Division VI playoff team
the past two seasons.
Hardin Northern dropped football?
The Black Knights, for Week 2, sched-
uled Lucasville Valley, a team that went
12-1 last season and finished atop Divi-
sion V, Region 19.
Our program has reached that
point, said Van Buren coach Kevin
Shoup. Weve become more com-
petitive with the top-tier teams in the
Blanchard Valley Conference, and
moving forward we want to become
beyond competitive with them. We want
to start knocking some of them off.
Being one of the bigger teams in
the BVC, well be Division VI this year
playing a lot of Division VII teams, we
needed to pick up some quality oppo-
nents for secondary playoff points. Its
the direction and the expectations were
starting to develop around here, to be
the team that we want to be we have to
play and beat quality teams.
We want to play quality football
teams, and we also want to be recog-
nized as one of those.
The Black Knights will again be a
run-oriented ball club behind a sizable
offensive line that returns four starters
from a season ago. Both tackles, senior
Jacob Kelley (6-foot-7, 250 pounds) and
junior Isaac Sexton (6-1, 255) are back,
as are guards Andrew Kelley (6-1, 205),
a sophomore, and Collin Hiatt (6-0,
255), a senior.
Junior running back Ross Adolph
(6-1, 190) also returns. He rushed for
572 yards and 12 TDs a year ago despite
missing three full games and a good
chunk of a fourth to injury. Junior Adam
Endicott (6-0, 180) will be the quarter-
back; he got several starts and plenty of
playing time last season as Van Buren
suffered through a rash of injuries.
Despite the fact we lost a good,
large senior class, we have a lot more
experience than a lot of people realize
because we had to fill in for those inju-

According to lineman Jacob
Kelley: We need to make sure

According to linebacker
Collin Hiatt: We need to play
aggressively, fly to the ball and not
be scared to make a play.
Van Buren graduated a fine
senior class from last years squad,
and those seniors left the program
in solid shape. The Black Knights
continue to improve under coach
Kevin Shoup, and look poised to
post their first winning season

VANLUE Since Chris Yeater
took over as football coach four
years ago, Vanlue has enjoyed slow,
but steady growth. With just 16 play-
ers in his first season, the roster
climbed to 17 in year two, then 19
last year and finally 21 players head-
ing into this season.
There are two ways of looking
at the modest growth in interest in
Vanlue football. One could say the
roster has grown by just five players
since 2010, but Yeater prefers the
more optimistic view that indicates
a four-year growth spurt of 31 per-
cent.
Thats how Im looking at it,
Yeater said. With 30 boys in the
school, we have to keep the kids
involved.
Yeater has enlisted help from
active players to help sell the pro-
gram in the halls and classrooms
during the school day.
I think kids hear how much fun
we have, he said. All we ask is that
they come to one practice and see for
themselves. If they dont like it, they
dont have to come back. All we ask
is that they just give it a chance.
Senior Colton Houston once was
one of those players. Hed never
played football before his junior
season, but was hooked early, Yeater
said.
I think the f irst ti me hed
touched the bal l in a game, he
returned a kickoff 80 yards for a
touchdown against Cory-Rawson,
he said. When he came to the side-
line, he said I guess I have to stay
on the kick-return team. He just has
that football sense.
Although the renewed interest in
football at Vanlue has not yet trans-
lated into a proportional increase in
wins on the field (the program has a
combined 4-26 record over the past
three seasons), Yeater believes his
team is on track for better things

STRENGTHS: Numbers. More
players mean more depth for the

roster. That is
exactly twice
as many as last
season.
WEAK-
NESSES:
Numbers. Even
though the
Wildcats have
more players
than any time in recent history,
even one or two injuries (and
what team doesnt experience at

According to quarterback
Nick Hagerty: We should have
fresh legs this year. We need to get
more production out of our players.
Well have more success if every-
one does their job.
Def ens e
According to defensive
tackle Brody Hanna: In the
three-man front, we were getting
double-teamed a lot. With the four-
man front, we should get more one-
on-one opportunities. It will allow
us to play to our personnel.
Although coach Chris Yeater
lost five seniors from last years
class, the Wildcats added nine play-
ers this year for a net gain of four
new players. With a large eighth-
grade team, Yeater expects a fifth
straight year of growing numbers
next year, too. The result of those
larger numbers is more depth on
the line on both sides of the ball,
so dont look for everyone on the
Wildcats schedule to be able to
push them around like in years
past.

playing. And by then we could turn on
the lights to play basketball. We were
always doing something.
Micah went on to join his brother
Marcus, the elder by two years, in star-
ring at both quarterback and defensive
back at FHS. After Marcus went on to
play safety at Michigan State, Micah
completed a career that included out-
rageous numbers such as 3,443 yards
and 46 touchdowns rushing and 7,864
yards and 65 touchdowns passing. He
also kicked 108 extra points. And in
his senior year of 2008, he helped the
Redmen record their first playoff vic-
tory since winning the state champi-
onship in 1996.
His instincts, his knowledge of
the game, his footwork and things like
that ... and he had supreme confidence
in himself, Grine said. I would go
out of my way in films when Micah
made a mistake to make a big deal
about it just for the (benefit) of the
other players. I got on everybody, but
when Micah messed up: What are
you doing? How can you ...? It was
an opportunity to
show the team that
Im going to get
on the best player
every bit as much
as Im going to get
on you. He never
came up to me
with Why do you
have to embarrass
me in front of the
team? He took
it with a grain of
salt and some-
times hed walk
out of the meeting
room and give me a little smile after
Id jumped his butt.
Pam Moore noted that the success
her two sons have had didnt come
without putting in a lot of work.
(Micah) has always been this
hard-working kid, she said. Hes
like the Energizer Bunny. He goes,
goes, goes. When he wants some-
thing, he gets it. Through his high
school career, when it came to the
materialistic things in life, (former
Fostoria educator) Ken Watson had
these kids working out on the farm.
He was there bright and early in the
morning, he would work and he would
earn money to get whatever it was he
wanted. Thats just the kind of kid he
is, so there was never any doubt in my
mind that (reaching the professional
level) was going to happen. In one
sport or another, that was his dream.
I knew it was going to happen.
We tell the girls (sisters Jada
Hampton and Erica Moore), if you
want it, are you going to do what
nobody else is going to do? Are you
going to get up and go to the gym early
in the morning? Are you going to go
to every open gym, and when nobody
else is there, are you going to be there?
Thats what shows me youre going
to make it that you really want it,
that youre hungry. Micah was that
kid. Micah was hungry. He did every-
thing he had to do. I dont think either
one of the boys, when they gave them
a weeks break in between sports, took
a weeks break. You keep going. It was
that hunger. I guess its in his blood.
I dont know.
When it came to recruiting, Hyde
was well-sought by mid-majors such
as the Mid-American Conference
schools, but little developed with
power-conference schools. Iowa was
one exception, and wanting to play
at the highest level possible, Hyde
accepted coach Kirk Ferentzs schol-
arship offer.
Nearly all of Hydes playing time
as a freshman came on special teams.
The next summer, however, he nailed
down a starting cornerback spot and
he never missed a start during the rest
of his college career.
Certainly, some memories were
made. For example, Micahs Hawk-
eyes defeated his brothers Spartans
twice, and in the second of those
matchups Micah raced 66 yards for a
touchdown after taking a lateral from
Tyler Sash after
Sash intercepted
a pass.
At the end of
that same season,
Hyde made a
72- yard, f i el d-
crossing intercep-
tion return for a
touchdown and
became the defen-
sive most valu-
able player of the
Insight Bowl in a
victory over Mis-
souri.
Iowa did not have a very good team
in Hydes senior season, but the 6-foot,
197-pounder solidified himself as an
NFL prospect by collecting 78 tack-
les, 14 pass breakups, three fumble
recoveries, two forced fumbles and
an interception. All of that brought
him the Big Ten recognition as its top
defensive back.
Who would have thought that
Micah Hyde would be the Tatum-
Woodson Award winner for this
year? Grine said. I mean, hes play-
ing on a 4-8 team that didnt reach the
goals and things that people expected
out of them. Its just the respect he got
from other teams in the league.
Grine added with a laugh: It was
frustrating, watching on TV. He was
never on the screen because they
never threw his way.
A sour note in his senior year came
in October when he was among stu-
dents arrested in connection with an
incident at an Iowa City bar. Hyde,
who said he made a dumb decision
on the night of the incident and called
it a learning experience, has since
paid a fine in connection with a public
intoxication charge.
Hyde said NFL scouts were under-
standing of the situation, and the
Packers eventually chose him in about
the range of the draft in which he was
led to believe he would go.
True to his easy-going, stress-
deflecting nature, Hyde was playing
golf in Fostoria on the Saturday he
was chosen instead of being parked
in front of a television watching draft
coverage.
Hes taken that same mental
approach into his first NFL training
camp, where its all football nearly all
the time. Staying in the dormitories at
little St. Norbert College in the adja-
cent town of De Pere, the Packers
came awake at 6 oclock each morning
and then traveled to the training com-
plex near Lambeau Field for weight
lifting and practice. Meetings would
then last into the night.
I knew it was going to be mentally
hard, he said. We had OTAs before,
but this is accelerated. Ive been in
training camps before, so I know what
its like.
In training camp, Hyde joined a
cornerback crew that was a bit banged
up as well as lacking the presence of
veteran Charles Woodson, with the
former Fremont Ross and Michigan

to come if numbers continue to rise
and his players continue to put in the
hard work that has become a Vanlue
tradition.
As coaches, were really excited,
he said. We work hard, and practices
every year are more competitive. This
year, weve had more depth than weve
ever had. The kids are pushing hard
and doing the extra things to make
themselves better.
The biggest difference this year,
Yeater says, is more linemen on both
sides of the ball.
In past years, a lack of depth has
left his offensive and defensive linemen,
which often are the same kids, running
on empty by the fourth quarter. For
example, last years squad had just six
linemen to man both sides of the ball
for the entire season. This year, a dozen
linemen have been practicing with the
team throughout the summer.
That added depth has allowed
Vanlue to transition this season from
a 3-4 defense to a 4-3, a move that
should allow the
Wildcats to get
more pressure at
the point of attack
as well as help pre-
vent linemen from
running out of gas.
Manning that
four- man front
probably will by
Tyler Wingate,
Logan Desgranges, Brody Hanna and
Dominic Crafts.
On the other side of the ball, former
running back Nick Hagerty will line up
behind center in Vanlues spread forma-
tion, with Jason Summers, a three-year
starter in the backfield, carrying most
of the load in the running game.
The change from running back to
quarterback has been a learning experi-
ence for Hagerty.
You have to read the receivers and
the safeties, cornerbacks and lineback-
ers, he said. You have to watch the
linemen, who are watching you. There
is a lot of work
involved.
In a perfect
worl d, Yeater
hopes to have a
balanced attack
out of the spread
that includes a
50- 50 run-pass
split.
The best thing for us would be
to establish the run and control the
clock, but weve not been very good
at doing that the last three years, he
said. Thats why weve been a heavier
passing team in the past than we would
like to be. We have to get our athletes
the ball and see if they can make plays
for us.
end spot for the second straight year.
Josh Kirkpatrick is the wingback and
Shaw Wright will handle the starting
running back duties for the Raiders.
Vodika said he could not be hap-
pier with the seniors he has and the
work they have put in to help turn the
program around. He said he expects
great things from his upperclassmen
this season.
Colin is the natural leader and
we know Mac can be a major college
player, he said. Jack has had a real
good year offensively and defensively
and has worked hard and is a good
leader. Smitty (Jordan Smith), he just
has a motor. He likes to hit. Obviously,
your senior class has got to carry you.
Junior Austin James is the center,
while freshmen Gabe Boose and
Dakota Bowling will start in the slot
and at split end, respectively.
Lakota will fashion a shotgun
wing-T offense this year after scrap-
ping the I-formation used in previ-
ous seasons. Vodika said the biggest
reason for the change is that the new
system better utilizes the skills of the
players he has, and so far it has been
a successful move.
To me, the transition has been
good because weve kept the good
parts of what weve done in the past,
he said. This is good for Colin to be
in the shotgun. Colins throwing the
ball well. The big thing, its good for
us now and its good for us down the
road.
Defensively, the Raiders will stick
with the 3-4 alignment and return
Flanagan, Smith and Raymond along
the front line. Kirkpatrick and sopho-
more Mason Wagner hold down the
inside linebacker spots, while speedy
sophomores Andrew Ferree and Spen-
cer King are the outside linebackers.
Bowling will be one of the corner-
backs, while senior Julian Boose and
freshman Madison Jaso are battling
for the other corner position. Tim-
mons will roam the middle as the free
safety and junior Jordan Jaso is the
strong safety, known as the Apache
in Lakotas scheme.
Smith said the front will be the
unit that sets the tone for the defense,
which gave up an average of 31.6
points per game in 2012, including
38.3 in MAL play. The overall speed
of the defense is something he said has
improved and will be key to shutting
down some of the top offensive attacks
in the league.
Weve got a big front three, Smith
said. Our outside linebackers, they
can really fly. They can be one end of
the field to the other in no time and
I think thats really going to help us
contain and keep everything into our
big guys.
Discipline this year is ten times
better than any previous years that
I can remember. Last year we had
none.
The biggest problem the Raid-
ers face is lack of depth behind the
starters. Vodika said he is not wor-
ried about numbers because if a team
comes in with 80 players, they can
only put 11 on the field.
He said if the team is able to avoid
injuries at key positions, Lakota can
make some noise this season.
It sure would be nice to turn the
corner and get some wins, Vodika
said. You dont know whats going
to happen, but I see us being much
more competitive.
They seem like they believe in
what were selling a whole lot better
and a whole lot more. Got to still see
the end result. Thats going to be a
big thing.
The kids are pushing
hard and doing the
extra things to make
themselves better.

FOSTORIA REVIEW TIMES, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2013
PRE P PRE VI E W T 33
Im just practicing hard
every day. The coaches
tell me Ive been doing
well. Im just trying to
get better.
MICAH HYDE
standout having left via free agency
for his original NFL team, the Oak-
land Raiders. As of the first exhibition
game, a bone bruise on his knee had
kept No. 1 corner Tramon Williams
out of practice, while a hamstring
problem had done the same to Casey
Hayward, a second year man regarded
as a strong candidate to line up on the
other side of Williams.
With opportu-
nities at hand for
newcomers and
young veterans
to shine, Hyde
jumped to the
front on the first
day of practice. In
two-minute-drill
work, Hyde gave
up a scoring pass
from Rodgers to
James Jones not a complete oddity
in past regular-season NFL play
but he was more noticed for batting
down several passes.
If you had asked me who was
the one player that jumped out to
me today, Id say it was Micah, head
coach Mike McCarthy said. Thats
something that you saw on his college
film at Iowa his ability to play the
football. He has excellent ball skills.
Hes a very good anticipator. He
jumped out to me.
Hyde took the early success in
stride.
Im just practicing hard every
day, he said. The coaches tell me
Ive been doing well. Im just trying
to get better.
In short time, the Packers played
their Family Night scrimmage,
which drew 63,000 to Lambeau Field.
Among them were players parents,
with the Packers picking up the tab
and providing special events.
In addition to it being the first time
to see Hyde play as a professional for
Pam and Clayton Moore, it was Hydes
first time in a true NFL atmosphere
the place was rocking and wild, he
said and his first time on the fabled
stadiums playing surface.
When I walked out there, I took it
in for a second and said, Wow, this is
actually happening, he said.
Hyde said his mom and step-dad
had a blast on the weekend, which
included the three of them going to
Milwaukee for a Brewers game on
Sunday.
Then it was back to work for Hyde
and preparations for his first exhibi-
tion game. As he had in the intrasquad
contest, Hyde took the field as the
nickelback with the first defense.
True to the life of a defensive
back, the game against the Cardinals
brought its highs and lows for Hyde.
He tied for the team lead in tackles
with five, including three solos. But he
also surrendered a touchdown in the
17-0 Packers loss on a 1-yard fade pass
from Drew Stanton to Jaron Brown.
A report from the Milwaukee Jour-
nal Sentinel said Hyde cheated inside
to cut off a potential slant pattern on
the touchdown pass.
Its not rocket science, Hyde was
quoted as saying in the Journal Senti-
nel. I know I have that guy man up.
Im not supposed to let him catch the
ball. Next time, its about competing.
Hopefully, next time in that situation
Ill make the play.
Hyde wasnt alone in troubled
corner play, though, as veterans
Davon House and
Sam Shields were
also beaten sig-
nificantly.
Shi el ds, i n
effect, repeated
the mantra of
defensive backs
everywhere.
Things like
that are going to
happen, he said.
Being a cornerback, you just have to
forget and keep it moving.
So the push continued for Hyde.
While he said the expanse of the
playbook is the biggest challenge hes
faced in the preseason, he believes his
experience with a variety of defenses
at Iowa prepared him well for much
of what the Packers do. Also, he is a
four-year veteran of special teams in
college, so his ability to contribute in
that area could help get him on the
field, he said.
Hydes former high school coach
expressed complete confidence in
Hyde surviving both cutdown dates.
Nothing would surprise me from
that kid, he said. Hes just very
mature, very focused, very driven,
highly motivated all of the things
I think you have to be successful at
the Division I level and at the profes-
sional level.
Regardless of how his pro football
career transpires, Hyde will have
plenty of life to live afterward, and his
degree from Iowa in recreation and
sports business certainly will help in
that regard. His brother, Marcus, got
his degree in advertising from Michi-
gan State.
When Micah got back here, he
brought a bunch of stuff home from
his apartment to put in storage, Pam
Moore said. He had his jersey that
the University of Iowa had framed
for him with a picture in one corner
where hes diving. Then theres one of
him and Clayton and I on Parents Day.
That was cool. There was another pic-
ture of just him.
And then there was his diploma
and it was in this beautiful frame. Of
everything, that was the thing that
meant the most. I mean, nobody can
ever take that away from you. Regard-
less of what either one of these boys
do in their lives, I can have those two
things hanging on my wall. Thats
more important than anything else.

drills.
Moore, playing left tackle, will be
joined up front on offense by Austin
Thallman at left guard, Nevin Lance
at center, Ian ODonnell at right
guard, Frasier Daniel at right tackle
and Derek Dryfuse at tight end. In
the backfield, the Tornadoes will
have Tyler Gillig at fullback, Lynch
at tailback and sophomore Stone
Simmons at quarterback. Jeffrey
Crawford and Nate Hoyda will be the
ends and Cody Kimmet, Josh Flint
and Rusty East will rotate in the slot.
Colatruglio hopes that his veteran
line will give an inexperienced back-
field a chance to grow.
We dont have a guy that has
caught a ball in a varsity game,
Colatruglio said of his wide receiv-
ers. (We) have some very talented
players ... but theyre freshmen and
sophomores, so weve got to get that
consistency. Theyre going to make
great plays and then theyre going to
make sophomore mistakes and we
have to try and limit the mistakes
and build on the good stuff.
Simmons will be the first starting
quarterback in Colatruglios four-year
tenure with Columbian whos not a
senior.
Hes not going to have to win
games, thats the biggest thing,
Colatruglio said of Simmons. Were
going to ask him to manage the game
and make throws he can make and
take what defenses are giving us. Hes
going to do a lot of handing off and
having that experience around him
with those guys up front and our run-
ning back will allow him to settle in
and play his game.
Were not going to throw 40
times a game where he has to win a
game for us.
Columbians defense will include
Chase Keller and Dryfuse at the ends,
Codey Chance and Reed Vaughn at
the tackles, Jacob Dickman and Ross
Pauley at the outside linebackers,
Lynch and Gillig at the inside line-
backers, Josh Briggs and Crawford at
the corners and Hoyda at free safety.
Chance earned All-Northwest
District second team and All-NOL
second team honors a year ago, while
Hoyda joined him on the All-NOL
second team.
Weve got big, physical guys (up
front) and then our secondary is
experienced, Colatruglio said of his
defense. We have a free safety, Nate
Hoyda, who started last year. Jeffrey
Crawford saw some time in the sec-
ondary. So we have some experience
and some depth at all three levels of
our defense.
With all that talent on both sides
of the ball, Columbian needs one
more ingredient to achieve and sur-
pass the level of success it reached
last season.
Teamwork, Lynch said. Not
individual stats or anything, just all
working as a team, doing the job.
Moore added: Its like our broth-
ers out there. Were all fighting for
that one goal and thats to get that
ring, go 15-0.

group. Theyre a very tight-knit group,
top to bottom, from freshmen on.
Senior Austin Ball and sophomore
Adam Recker will split time at tail-
back. After three years at cornerback,
senior Dan Reineke will play offense
for the first time, platooning with
juniors Michael Smith and Donavon
Stith at wide receiver. Long, a junior,
is starting at
quarterback for
a second season.
Were going
to run the same
of f ense, j ust
tweaking, get-
ting better, Fox
said. We return
a lot of guys, so
we feel that we
want to keep
it simple and
become better
and faster at what we do.
The Senecas defense will feature
sophomore Devin Stith and Perry at
the ends, Iannantuono and Somers at
the tackles, Recker and senior Mitch
Depinet at inside linebacker, Long and
Ball at outside linebacker, Ritzler at
free safety and Reineke and Donavon
Stith at the corners.
Our secondary is pretty strong,
Fox said. We return nine starters
there on defense, too. Marcus Som-
mers is an All-Ohio defensive tackle
and our D-line were very fortunate
to return all but one of those starters
and weve got another kid who was a
part-time starter last year.
A year ago we were coming in
with one returning starter; this year
we come back with all of them up
front, so we feel good there. Mitch
Depinet was our leading tackler last
year and hes back, and again our sec-
ondary will be fast and well be physi-
cal back there.
Somers is confident that the defen-
sive line is solid.
We have some new linebackers
that didnt play last year, he said.
But from the first couple of practices,
theyve stepped up and theyre going
to fill the spots pretty well.
With a small roster at 36 players,
the Senecas need to avoid injuries,
but if they can do so, they should be
among the top
teams i n the
MAL and be
headed for the
postseason once
again.
We want to
compete to win,
Fox said. We
want to compete
to be champions
thats our
goal, and our
slogan is Work to be champions. At
every level, thats what we do, each
and every day.
Fox added that just making the
postseason is no longer the height of
his players expectations.
Fortunately, the last two years
weve been able to make it to the
second round, he said. Sometimes
you have to let them understand that
its not a given that everyone makes
the playoffs. For them, they think its
going to happen.
But with that mindset, now
theyre not satisfied with just making
the playoffs. Theyre not satisfied with
just winning one or two games. They
have big aspirations. They want to be
champions, and realistic or not, we
dont know whos to say. We just work
every day to see what could happen.

of remind him of that every time he gets
a little down. I can say you held your
own against national competition; this
should be just as good for you.
Arnold will more than likely see
the ball a lot, but hell have a new quar-
terback throwing to him. Sophomore
Nick Gillett will replace two-year starter
Zach Foster, who had about 1,400 yards
combined through the air and on the
ground and 14 touchdowns in 2012.
Although Gillett is inexperienced on
the varsity level, Cooper has confidence
in the 5-8, 155-pound youngster, saying
hes a real cool and collected, poised kid.
Were happy with him. Hes not as
big as Foster, but his confidence is there
and there wont be any issues.
Joining Gillett in the backfield will
be juniors Austin Isaacs at fullback and
halfback Austin Jasso, who combined
for 296 rushing yards and five TDs last
season.
Perhaps the biggest strength for the
Royals is the line, with several returning
lettermen. Senior tackle Justin Krouse
(6-3, 290) and junior center Devin
Uzelac (6-0, 220) will help protect the
young backfield, along with tight end
Sawyer Haines (6-4, 245) contributing
to Coopers pistol offense.
Defensively, Cooper will switch to a
4-4 defense to better fit his personnel.
We have these guys here who are
better D-line than linebacker, so we
need to put their hand in the ground as
opposed to staying in the three-front
like we did last year. So far the kids have
liked it, Cooper said.
With 28 players on the roster, the
Royals will have to rely on players
going both ways. Krouse and Haines,
the starting defensive tackle and nose
tackle, will be joined by senior guards
Nolan Kerr (6-0, 190) and Jacob Firs-
don (6-2, 200), who will be defensive
ends as well.
Were starting to get a core of kids
that were confident with and were
happy to have that if something were
to happen, we can slide them right in
and were able to just keep clicking,
Cooper said.
In the secondary, Arnold will lead
the way at safety, along with sophomore
Dylan Hall. Seniors Sebastian Baxter
and Brik Dauterman will anchor the cor-
nerback position and sophomore Noah
Smith will lead the linebacker corps.
Were gonna be young at the cor-
ners and young at linebacker, but then
we have depth and experience at the
line, and depth and experience at the
safety position, Cooper said.
ries, Shoup said. A lot of guys got their
feet wet at the varsity level last year, and
thats one reason why we have such high
expectations.
Shoup said Endicott, who was 26 of
73 passing for 415 yards and 1 TD last
year, is maturing nicely.
We should be able to get the ball
into peoples hands and take the load off
our tailback, Shoup said. Were going
to open it up and throw the ball a little
more this year.
Juniors Draeton Fasone (6-0, 160)
and Lucas Huber (6-1, 185) will be the
wide receivers. Junior Drew Connor
(6-2, 180) is the tight end, and senior
Joey Nelson (5-10, 175) the fullback.
Senior center Nick Hoehn (5-10,
205) is the lone new starter on the
offensive line.
We should be pretty strong up
front, Shoup said. I have three cap-
tains along that
front five. Collin
Hiatt is a senior,
hes been a starter
for three and a half
years, and he has
that senior itch. He
realizes this is the
last go-around and
he wants to make
everything of it. Thats been apparent
the entire offseason with his leadership.
The Black Knights will again run
a 4-4 defense. Defensive ends Conner
and sophomore Marcus Brand (6-2,
180) return on the line with sophomore
Payten Whitticar (5-10, 205) and junior
Cody McMonigal (5-7, 270) at tackle.
Hiatt and Nelson are the inside line-
backers with junior Jameson Jacobs
(5-11, 185) and senior Kurt Gibson (5-8,
160) manning the outside.
Ado l p h a t
corner, Fasone at
safety and junior
cornerback Cole
Martin (5-10, 165)
form a key second-
ary unit.
The defensive
backfield is a real
strength for us,
Shoup said. Martin started all last
year for us, Fasone is a headhunter
who can cover a lot of ground at safety
and Adolph is another true athlete.
Adolph has never played corner
before, but with his speed and coach-
ability hes picked right up on it.

lineman Ive ever coached and he is
definitely the leader of our team,
Nutter said.
The Chieftains also have five
varsity-ready receivers, according
to Nutter, including senior Jordan
Stewart, who led the Chieftains in
receiving a year ago with 37 catches
for 503 yards and four scores.
Also at wideout will be fellow
seniors Eli Tooker and Zach Clouse,
as well as junior Ryan Lommerse and
sophomore Logan Tyree.
Getting the ball to the talented
receiving core could be the biggest
question the Chieftains will face in
2013.
Right now (junior) Derek Runion
and (sophomore) Austin Tooker are
battling it out for the quarterback
position, Nutter said shortly before
the teams first scrimmage. Theyve
had a great competition and they have
handled everything well so far. They
encourage each other and coach each
other, but both of them want the job.
The defense returns six starters
from a year ago, including Hill and
Foos up front to control the line of
scrimmage. Hill at end and Foos at
defensive tackle will be joined by
Burns at the other defensive tackle
position and Armon at the other end
spot.
Again, I think our strength defen-
sively is up front, Nutter said. I
think we have a good shot at blowing
offenses back and not allowing them
to run the ball on us, as we want to
do on them.
The Chieftains also have a versa-
tile group of linebackers, according
to Nutter.
Malone and junior Matt Huth will
hold down the inside linebackers
spots, while Clouse and Lommerse
will be the outside linebackers.
The two corners will be Eli Tooker
and senior Ben Bodart, while Stewart
will be trying his hand at the safety
position this season.
Nutter hopes experience at key
positions will amount to more vic-
tories this season for Hopewell-
Loudon, which will be moving to
the Blanchard Valley Conference next
season as the MAL dissolves.
The MAL is such a great league,
Nutter said. Such a shame we wont
have those rivalries necessarily any-
more, but it will be kind of a fare-
well tour this season. The rivalries
you build with Carey, (Tiffin) Cal-
vert, and Seneca East, they arent
easily found. We are pleased to go
to another conference, but it will be
a little bittersweet this season, for
sure.

last season, snagging 27 passes for
454 yards and four touchdowns. The
top receiver, Seth Bauer (38 catches,
513 yards, five touchdowns) gradu-
ated.
While injuries can be tough on a
team, no team plays with a concession
of defeat in mind.
And no matter the outcome, Ger-
isch is proud of his teams progress in
the last year despite the odds it has
faced.
The kids have worked real hard
and have done everything weve asked
them to do, Gehrisch said. Were
playing for pride thats always
important but were also shooting
for something higher, too.

Ramsey, a line-

earned honor-

ognition. Kieffer, when he returns,
will bring honorable mention All-BVC
credentials to the safety spot.
The Redskins starting defensive
line will have Vera and sophomore
A.J. Knepper at the tackles and Keefe
and Thompson at the ends. Ramsey
and Watkins will man the inside line-
backer spots, while Cooper and senior
Trevor Bowman will be the outside
linebackers.
The current secondary will include
Enders and Bohn at the corners and
Love at safety.
The Redskins are young, made up
of mostly freshmen and sophomores.
We want to be really well rounded
and do as well as we can, Vera said.
We definitely have a good team and
we have the talent to do some really
good things.
Before suffering his injury, Kieffer
took note of the mixture that could
bring a strong season to the Redskins.
We need to come in, work hard
every day and stay together as a
team, he said.

set things up for next year, or the
year after. Our goals are the same as
always: try to win every game, try to
win a league championship, and if we
can do that we will be up near the top
of our division and have a chance to
make the playoffs.
There will be a lot of new faces on
offense, and a new look as well. Rit-
zler will still employ the four-receiver
spread formation. The difference
will be at running back, where the
slash-and-dash of Settlemire will be
replaced by the ground-and-pound of
Austin Gutting, a 6-foot-3, 253-pound
senior who played defensive end last
season.
Brandon Muehl (6-4, 194), a junior,
takes over at quarterback, and Ritzler
has a deep corps of receivers in Nick
Kairys, Joe Hammond, Tyler Sullivan
and Grant Niswander and back-ups
Zach Haynes, Sam Siampaus, Sam
McGhee and Nick Kiffmeyer.
Muehl saw varsity time last season,
rushing for 148 yards and two TDs
and completing 2 of 3 passes before
being sidelined with a knee injury.
Brandon has worked hard and hes
throwing well. I think well be able to
throw a little more than people think
we can, Ritzler said.
Hes more of a sit-back-in-the-
pocket passer. He has the height and
a strong arm, and hes able to get the
ball out on the flats where our guys
can do something. Now its about
learning the offense and making the
correct reads, and hes doing a good
job with it.
Two honorable mention All-TRAC
selections right tackle Eric Beard
(6-1, 202, sr.) and left guard Sam Iliff
(6-3, 245, jr.) are the lone returning
offensive starters. Noah Routson (6-4,

spot, senior Andy Strzesynski (6-0,

senior Anthony Gallagher (5-6, 228)

sophomore Emmanual Mogolu (5-9,

meyer (5-11, 180) and Kairys (5-11,

With losing records at the JV (1-6)
and freshmen (1-5) levels a year ago,
Ritzler says this group has something
to prove.
I think theres a little bit of a chip
on their shoulder, he said. All theyve
been hearing is since we lost all those
kids is we wont be able to do this and
we wont be able to do that. We know
it will be a challenge, but I think the
kids are using that as motivation to
prove people wrong.
