First Grade Information Homework Homework has two purposes. The first and major purpose is to promote and encourage responsibility and accountability. It is your childs responsibility to complete the assignment and return it to school on the assigned day. Failing to do so will result in your child staying in at recess time to complete the assignment. Do not try to take the blame for your childs missing work. It is your childs responsibility. He/she needs to be responsible for completing and returning his/her own work. The second purpose is to review and practice skills. Homework will be a review of the previous lessons. Homework will never be new information. Please work with your child every night. Research has proven that if a child reads ten minutes a day, it will increase reading fluency. So-o-o-o, dont forget to encourage your child to READ, READ, READ!!! Homework Folder: Your child will bring home a homework folder every night. This folder is meant to keep each student organized and responsible. All homework papers will be sent home in the folder on the right side and should be returned the next day. Any papers on the left side are graded or papers that we did in class together. The left side should be checked every night and all papers removed. Please send any money or notes back to me on the right side of the folder. Mathematics Homework: Math homework will be sent home almost every night. All homework should be turned in the morning after it is assigned. The math homework will be sent home in the students

homework folder. The homework should be completed by the student and checked by the parent/caregiver. Reading Homework: Your child will bring home a guided reading book every night that he/she read during small group time. Please listen to your child read the book and sign the reading log. The book and the signed reading log should be returned every day. Please remember that if you do not sign the reading log I will assume that your child has not read the book. Friday Folders: Your child will bring home a Friday Folder every Friday. It will contain my newsletter, report cards, a school newsletter, and any other important notes/information. It is very important that you read everything in the folder every week and return the folder on Tuesday. If the folder comes back with the information unread or unsigned,I will send the folder back to you. If a student loses his/her Friday folder, he/she will not receive a new one. Langauge Arts: Our language arts program is called Literacy By Design. It is a new program this year. We will use this program for reading, writing, and grammar. Health Concerns: Please notify me of any specific concerns. Students may not bring medicine to school. If your child needs to have medicine distributed at school, a parent or guardian needs to bring the medicine and the dosage to the office. Please notify me of any allergies, so that I can be sensitive to those. The nurse will provide cough drops; please do not send these to school with your student. Annual Celebrations: Specific details will be sent home with your child by letter for each holiday event. Our birthday celebrations will be held during milk break. If your child wishes to bring birthday treats to share with the class they must be commercially prepared. Please

remember that according to our new district health and wellness policy the snack provided must be nutritious. We have 18 students. Transportation: Please clarify by note or a phone call any changes about the way that your child is transported to and from school. This is important information regarding the safety of your child. Please be sure that your student understands his/her way of transportation every day. Milk Break: Milk is 35 cents a day for every student. Milk break will be every afternoon. P.E.: Students must wear gym shoes to PE. Students may keep an extra pair of gym shoes at school for PE days. Toys: I ask that no toys be brought into school from home. Our classroom is filled with items to keep us busy, and lost or broken toys result in very sad feelings! Recess: Please make sure your child brings a jacket on cool days and a coat on cold days. We will have inside recess on rainy days, snowy days, and when it is too cold to be outside. Book Orders: I will send home book orders periodically. These book orders offer childrens books at very affordable prices. Ordering is completely optional, however, the more books our class purchases, the more points we earn for classroom books and materials. If you do purchase books, please send money in with the order. Please send checks made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. Do not send cash. Books normally arrive within 2 weeks after the order is placed.
