This document contains study questions for a neuroscience lecture about sensory pathways in the central nervous system. It asks students to define dermatomes, describe the areas innervated by spinal nerves and lemnisci. It also asks students to name sensory conduction channels, explain why the term "spinothalamic tract" is a misnomer, draw the spinothalamic pathway from skin to neocortex including sites of decussation and synapses, and describe the behavior of animals that have had their forebrain removed.

9.01 Study Questions Lecture 10
1. Define "dermatome". Describe a typical thoracic dermatome. 2. Describe the area of the body surface rostral to the dermatomes for the spinal nerves. What innervates this region? 3. What is meant by a lemniscus? 4. Name three types of channels of conduction for sensory information entering the CNS. 5. Why is the term "spinothalamic tract" somewhat of a misnomer? 6. Draw, on an outline of the embryonic mammalian CNS, the spinothalamic pathway (the "paleolemniscus) leading from skin to neocortex. Note where the axons decussate, and where there are synapses. 7. Describe the behavior of an animal which has had the forebrain removed. (What behavior is the most normal, and what is the most abnormal?) Note some differences between different species in which this has been done.
