How to Use a Chinese Dictionary

Prerequisites * Able to recognize radicals (top, bottom, left right positions) of Chinese characters * Able to count number of strokes in Chinese radicals & characters The Chinese character for this example is: Step 1: Chinese dictionaries have a radical index like this in the front that lists all character radicals by stroke count in Part I. Count the number of strokes in the radical of the character. The example character radical has three strokes.

Step 2: On the radical index, three strokes radicals are listed here.

Find the example character radical among the three stroke radical list and note the the number next to it. For the example radical, this number 34, as shown in the picture to the right.

Step 3: Part II of the radical index lists all Chinese characters by radical. Find the number 34 from Step 2 in this section.

Step 4: Count the number of strokes remaining in the character. The example character has three more strokes. Under entry 34, characters are listed starting from fewest to most strokes. The picture on the left show the example character listed at the bottom with the number 1675 next to it.

Final Step: Turn to page 1675 in the dictionary. The example character can be found on this page.
