The Spanish Dracula was part of the same 1931 shoot that produced Bela Lugosis famous performance based on Bram Stokers 1897 novel. While the English language film was shot during the day, a Spanish cast performed at night. American guitar god Gary Lucas fell in love with the film and wrote an original score to accompany it since it didnt have a musical soundtrack. He will perform in live during the screening. The Friday evening service (November 8 at 7:30pm) will include special ceremonies and prayers accompanied by a professional choir. The guest speaker will be Tabernacle member Dr. Ruth Westheimer. A reception immediately following the service will mark the opening of an art exhibit presented in conjunction with the YM/YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood, Experiencing a Time of War and Beyond: Portraits of Spirited Holocaust Survivors. The exhibit chronicles the lives of six members of the congregation who emigrated from the Third Reich and th went on to lead successful lives. Set in Depression-Era Chicago, and based on a family history, Rags & Iron is the story of how a Russian Jew and an African -American man, both unemployed, who teamed up to form a scrap peddling business in order to feed their families. Racial tensions threaten to pull them apart, but their friendship triumphed, and today serves as an example of how people from different backgrounds can do something together that neither can accomplish alone. Middle School Enrollment & Information: All districts will hold middle school open houses for interested students in the weeks following the District Middle School Fairs. Families can contact schools directly for dates and times, or visit www.nyc.gov/schools/ChoicesEnrollment/middle/calendar. Middle School Directories Are Now Available. Each student will receive a copy of the Directory of NYC Middle Schools 2013-2014 from their elementary school. The Directories provide information about middle schools in each district so families can make informed choices when applying to middle school. English versions of the Directories are now available online; translated versions of the directories will be available online on a rolling basis. Middle School Applications will be distributed to families in November and are due back to guidance counselors in December. Dyckman Institute Scholarship: Columbia University encourages all outstanding high school seniors from Washington Heights or Inwood to apply for admission to Columbia College or the Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS). There are more than 300 individually named needbased scholarships available to CU students. One of these, the Dyckman Institute Scholarship, provides financial support exclusively to students from Washington Heights or Inwood who would not otherwise be able to afford the full cost of attending Columbia. Las year, 18 undergraduate students from Washington Heights/Inwood received $653,000 in need-based scholarships from Columbia College & SEAS. Update on the W. 215 Street step-street: The New York City Department of Design & Construction, the Citys Architect and the agency responsible for implementing DOTs capital redesign and repair of th the 215 Street step-street reports that they have a Notice to Proceed with this long -awaited project. DDC has committed to: coordinate with related City agencies and at the community to minimize inconvenience during the project; post advisory notices throughout the affected project work area in advance of the anticipated work; work with special-needs individuals to minimize any inconvenience; monitor construction operations and within DEP regulations to minimize noise;

In addition, DDC notes that: Emergency access and pedestrian access to adjacent buildings will be maintained at all times. Merchant deliveries will be allowed. A rodent and water bug survey was conducted. Baits and control stations have been placed within the construction zone. During construction there may be intermittent, limited street traffic and/or parking restriction; signs will be posted in advance of the anticipated restriction(s). The $2.5m project, is anticipated to be completed next winter. As soon as we receive a construction schedule, we will share that information with you. Pop-Up Repair: an update from the organizers: Last summer was such a success that we are planning our next New York Pop Up for June 2014, in a neighborhood to be announced soon. Let's keep fixing stuff! Moving forward, we are actively looking for communities, individuals, and businesses who want to help bring Pop Up Repair to their neighborhoods. The World Monuments Fund recently included the Palisades on its 2014 World Monuments Watch list, citing the potential construction of LG's tower headquarters.
