Addition of a system of coplanar Forces Scalar Notation

When the resultant of more then two forces has to be obtained, it is easier to find the component of each force along specified axes, add these components algebraically and then form the resultant , rather then form the resultant of the force by successive application of the parallelogram law on pair of vectors

F= Fx+Fy F= Fx +Fy

Cartesian Vector Notation It is also possible to represent the components of a vector in term of Cartesian Unit vector. This method help to solve vector in three dimension domain In two Dimension the Cartesian unit vector i and j are used to represent the x and y components and for 3D it is I, j, k F= Fxi + Fyj F = Fxi + Fy(-j) F=Fxi Fyj

Coplanar Force Resultant

1- Resolve each force into it x and y components 2- take algebraic sum F1 = F1xi + F1yj F2= -F2xi + F2yj F3= F3xi F3yj

FR = (FRX2 + FRY2)(1/2) Angle= tan -1 |FRY / FRX |
