CLASSIC flfMfHTS SAMPLfR

{fflpga EHTEnTnlHflEHT}
There are four acts featured on this 12" sampler from a forthcoming CD compilation highlighting acts from the hip hop backwater of Washington. DC's main musical export is Go Go but the crews here tread a jazzier, less pyrotechnical aural path. Kicking off with the excellent Black Anger (check the '206 Mixtapes Worldwide' EP) who come with a cleverly sampled acoustic guitar that loops into your head whilst the (conscious) lyrics penetrate further_ Tilson's soully, more club based groove concludes side one fairly competently. Flipwise, you get ]aleel's superb, self produced 'Call It Like I See It', some wicked flute complements the rhodesy groove while the man himself drops more conscious verse - very nice_ Se are up next and their fat, deep, production sits well with the more direct manner and large, gloopy bass. Instrumentals of this and the Black Anger track round things up, plus it's on a UK release meaning a) you can find it and b) it's cheap, so there's really no reason not to. Treva Whateva 1/2
